Tim,
How goes the hand plane design/build process? Haven't seen much on it, I'm kinda wondering if it's still on your list of "to-do's".

Oh, it's still there - I've touched base (within the last couple of days) with a guy who says he has a virtually unlimited supply of stainless steel chunks. I'm hoping he can get me some nice pieces of 440F, 416, or 303. It's slow goin', though. Too chilly to do good milling work right now anyway; the shop still gets frost overnight.

WOW - there is a WORLD of difference between 440 and 416

440F is pretty decent stuff - it's free-machining.

I cut 440C at work. Great finishes, chips easily, but it's hard.
416, is akin to cutting butter.

416, is akin to cutting butter. I concur. I'm oft using a butter knife on my 416.
