I've had the idea and some sketches for this box for a couple of months now. I did some preliminary work the day I started the rocker build and got back to it last weekend. I finished it up today. I wanted something that looked "Southwest" and I think I achieved that goal. Like that G&G box, it's a prototype and there are a couple of things I will do differently on the next one. The dimensions are 9" wide x 6" deep x 4 5/8" tall. Woods are Walnut and Bois d'Arc with Eastern Red Cedar for the bottom. I used mini biscuits to join the miters and the finish is oil and shellac. Thanks for looking.

Golly Cody, you really out did yourself on that one! Really COOL COOL COOL! Looks like the side pieces just leave a hole to see the lining THEN the center piece glued into place... COOL way of doing it!! (for all sides?) How did you handle the top? Looks like it could be done various ways... Super nice job!! I've GOT to remember this one! ;D ;D I love the technique! Thank you!

Thanks for the comments, Joe.
The sides and ends started as 1/4" rectangular pieces of Bois d'Arc.
I used a pattern to mark the 1/4" Walnut and nibbled out the staggered design on the TS, using a small sled. (next time I'll use a flat-topped ripping blade) I glued the Walnut pieces onto the Bois d'Arc and when the glue was dry, fit a small piece in between on the ends. Whan those pieces had dried, I cut out and glued in the center Walnut pieces, then I cut the miters on the ends.
The top is made by cutting the sides and ends to length and then cutting a 1/4" groove in it for the Bois d'Arc insert. The center design was applied just like on the box sides.

Cody, that is an awesome looking box. I love how yellow Bois d'Arc turns out.
When I've used a TS to cut key slots in miters of boxes - I've always wished I had a flat toothed TS blade, so I know what ya mean, there.
Nice job!

That is a really cool design! I am really impressed by your artistic ideas. That Bois d'Arc is a pretty wood. I need to try some someday.

Thanks for the comments, guys and thanks for the clarification, Wisard...you had me going for a while. Actually, that about that box a couple of times today. Very unique craftsmanship. I was thinking of how to make one. Did you use a scroll saw on the SW emblem? And by no means are you a jerk, you, Tim, Jerry, Beamer? and a few others like Jake, Joe, Deepsplinter, Leo, etc are the candles that lit my fire. Lots of others too. You are a true Gentleman never forget that!

Did you use a scroll saw on the SW emblem? I cut the applied SW pattern with the bandsawusing a 3/4" Woodslicer re-saw blade cause that's what I had on the saw at the time. The set-up was so good I didn't want to change it. The cuts were actually all straight cuts and they are probably the hardest kind to make on a scroll saw. It was easy on the BS, even with that big, coarse blade on it. The notches in the outside Walnut pieces were done on the TS, using a small sled and "nibbling" away the material. I tried doing those on the bandsaw with a 3/8" blade and they didn't turn out very well (that was the day I started the rocker). I think when I attempt another similar box, I will add a 3rd Bois d'Arc pattern on top of the applied SW pattern. Edit In: If I have enough shop time, I'll document the making of that box this weekend.
