Good article, INCLUDING some of the OTHER articles linked to within it.
It does point out that I want to address my dovetail angles, narrow 'em up, & save myself a whole lot of hammer work.

tim, i see another avenue for you - you make the metal parts as a kit and then the purchaser uses whatever wood they want and fashions their own infill... i have no tools nor talent for metalworking. but i would love to do the woodwork on an infill plane...
just a thought.
and man - what a site! that guy is good.

I'd love to have one of those plane 'kit's where a fella like me could buy five or six and fit 'em with all sorts of wood that I have layin' around.
I'd say you'd do OK to do a few with the premium stuff, Rosewood and the like, and then make a few that are just the hardware so a lunk like me can do the fun work, lol.
Just sayin, it's a bugger to try to file yourself a plane out of a boat anchor, but rasping a tote out of oak, that's bunches easier.

I like the Kit idea too... Just have some good full-size patterns for the wood parts... we can make woodwork... But all of us cannot make metalwork. ;D

There's something to be said for this whole train of thought - I could even offer the "all metal parts" kits with none of the metal polishing done, with milling marks... but with the sole surface prefinished so it'd have the trademark stepped sole.

How difficult would it be to polish & clean up? Doesn't sound like it requires special talent & equipment... ... sounds good, if you think I could do it. ;D ;D Has something like this (kits) ever been done before? You may have stumbled onto something here! Put me on the list for something... haven't figured out What, yet... ;D

The polishing & cleanup would amount to a scrubdown with sandpaper over a flat substrate a la "Scary", starting with probably 320 & working up, stopping when it's as polished as you'd like it to be - the Full Schlamiel being buffed & waxed to a glasslike shine (which would be my sale point). The planes would be functional without any touchup - it'd be strictly for aesthetics. The peening would be milled off the surface, leaving a kind of "jeweled"-looking surface for the user to polish out, but there wouldn't be any file work. The edges would be prechamfered where it makes sense to have a chamfer, and all metal parts needing precision fitting would be prefitted. I'm looking now to find castings for the brass lever cap; I'm told they're out there. The adjuster will be all my own make (unless I farm out to the Chinese ).

There was a fellow who sold a bunch of peened dovetail metal parts kits and plans a few years ago. As I recall folks were grousing about the availability of some pieces that were not included in the original kit, backorder situation maybe? Those who managed to get all the bits and pieces together made some nice looking infill planes.
Jerry may recall more about this as it seemed to be centered in the woodnet hand tool nest.
