I am in the midst of building a pedestal bed frame. I have downloaded mattress sizes, but am unsure how much "slop" to put into the frame rails. It will be surrounded on three sides by a rail and a headboard on the forth side. There will be no box spring.
Anyone have a four sided enclosed mattress?
Oh, it'll be a queen (60" x 80") but have not bought it yet.

A half inch per side is enough to be able to flip it.

Are you asking how much room to allow for bed clothes and the hands that will be making the bed? I ask because I don't think 1/2" is enough for that (not that I've ever built one.)

Made many beds of various sizes. I always add 3" to width and length.
Another important dimension is the mattress thickness. This will affect the distance from the floor to the top of the bed slats which in turn determines the distance from the floor to top of mattress.
A friend once built a beautiful paneled, king sized, headboard for a new mattress his wife was purchasing. After he was finished she brought home one of those pillow top with box springs numbers - which he did not plan for. By the time the covers were on the bed you could only see about 6" of that beautiful paneled headboard.

The Mission bed I built called for 1 inch + lengthwise. Balanced out .5 top and bottom. I think the sides were the same. Either way, your bed spread should cover it. It is always a good idea to ask your wife or girlfriend what she thinks. Ultimately, she will tell you you did a good job or you have to build new frames! Lastly, check out your current bed.

Maybe I have mislead you guys. I am essentially building a box to drop the mattress into. The floor will be of birch plywood and the mattress will sit on that. The sides of this box will be no more than 2" high (just enough to keep the mattress from sliding off the floor), except the headboard will be the fourth side of the box. the pedestal will have three long drawers on either side. The bedclothes will drape over and cover this "box", but will hang short of the floor.
I just don't want to make the "box" too tight for the mattress to sit into, but I also don't want so much slop that I hit my shins before I find the mattress. I wouldn't think I'd need much more than 1/4" to a 1/2" on all sides.. if a mattress really measures a true 60"x 80".
I dunno.

Mark,
I have always made the frame fit the box spring pretty close, like 1/2" to 1" total clearance. However you say you are not using a box spring, mattress only?? If this is the case you will need more clearance for putting the fitted sheet on the mattress. Gotta leave room for the fingers to pull the sheet into place.

Mine is a king and I built it 76.5" wide. I also did not use a box spring and the mattress is only down in the "box" about 2". There is more room on the head/foot board ends because of the design. We have never had an issue getting sheets on because of the extra space on the ends. It does fit pretty tight on the sides.

Here is a thought, you can always make it smaller, it's a lot more trouble to make it bigger!
