Hi folks, Below you'll see a picture of my shopbuilt router table. I've arrived at the conclusion that it needs to be mobile, and I'd like to fashion a base for it that will allow me lock it down tight. Somewhere I've seen shopmade mobile base plans where the wheels flip up and the table would sit solidly on its own legs, and that seems ideal to me. Any ideas? Jim Brown Mansfield, PA

That's what I've got set up on my smaller (6") jointer... but it's too dark for me to go out & take pictures right now.

Being simple minded, I would be tempted to Pick up a pair of 4 inch fixed casters with very sturdy bolts (maybe 1/2" diameter) for attaching them. I would mount them with the bolt running horizontally through the legs at one end so that they almost touch the floor. Then by lifting the other side of the table, the wheels will lift the legs they are attached to off of the floor and you can roll it around to where ever you need it. Set the other end down and all four legs are again solidly on the floor.

Set the other end down and all four legs are again solidly on the floor. That's very nearly what I've got set up on that jointer - the side that doesn't have the fixed casters has a board attached to it with hinges, and carries a pair of swivel casters. That board normally swings up so that end rests on the floor, but can be swung down with a handle so the casters ride the floor instead, lifting that end of the table slightly. Kinda' like one of those trailer dolly things with the hitch ball.

This sounds like what I need. Tim, I'm not sure I'm visualizing this correctly. When the swivel casters are on the ground, do they raise their side high enough that the stationary casters take the weight on the other side?

The stationary ones always carry the weight on their side - they lift that side about 1/4". The swivel casters normally just rest on the floor till the board they're mounted to is tipped down, lifting their side a little so they can roll.

I got the idea from my old Ryobi BT3K. That was how it was made mobile. ;D

That's what I have on my BT3001 (?) TS... So THAT's how they work! They always seemed like a real PITA to me... I can't get to the REAR very easily without moving it OUT... It is very hard to tilt it forward being in the front at the same time! ;D ... a real pain!

Looks like the current plan is to steal a Shop Fox base from another tool. Boring but effective. Thanks as always for the help! (Shop photos soon, while it's still all clean and shiny!).
