I bought some poplar a while back and was intending to build some cabinets in our garage. Last week LOML decided she needed them right now instead of when I got a roundtoit. I had seen some listed on CL. We called one lady and went to look at what she had. They were covered in some awful looking laminate and were just particle board underneath. They just didn't fit what we needed. So there is a surplus place listing some. LOML and her mom went by and looked at them and when she came home she said I needed to go look at them. I didn't really think they would be anything we could use either. Turns out I was wrong (I haven't admitted that to her yet though). The government is tearing down some base housing a few units at a time and building new ones. The cabinets are coming out of these old units. For any of you who have been involved with the government you know they don't usually spare any expense. These are all wood construction and the rails and styles are out of what I believe is maple with the sides and shelves out of plywood. They are very well constructed and come in various different size units. We bought several sets and yesterday I spent all day hanging them up. The muscle in my back I thought had healed up pretty good is still talking to me today. But I got them up and they look pretty good. They are stained a dark color but since it is out in the garage it is no big deal. I got the cabinets for 15 bucks a unit. I can't build them for that even using mdf and poplar. So now I have a bunch of poplar I need to find another use for but I don't think that will be a problem. I even had some left over to put in my shop. So now when my back gets a little rest I am going to hang some out in my shop. I will get some pics posted when I can. I usually find out about these kinds of deals AFTER they are all gone. Got lucky this time.

Heckuva deal!! A school here in town was expanding/remodeling a few years ago. I was able to cabbage on to a few (very well built) cabinets and some eight foot light fixtures.....out of the dumpster I bet there was 50-60 various sized cabinets in there, but I only needed a few. They could have had a big sale and made a killin'.....but, they seemed to have enough money

The red tape a gov't entity has to go through to sell gov't property sometimes makes it easier and cheaper to just trash the stuff.
I once worked for a major gov't defence contractor. You would not believe the waste. If they completed contract "A" they could not use any of its resources to support contract "B." That included everything for office garbage cans to multi-million machines. We would often find cases - even pallets - of new tooling and such in the dumpster that had never even been opened.
It is a shameful watse.

When I was working in the medical industry - I have had to throw out bar stock just because we did not have the paperwork for tracability. We KNEW what the material was - just didn't have the paperwork. When it comes to the governmant - it's even worst - and we pay for it.
