I love Black and White Ebony! And, that is one of the woods that gives me trouble with the CA finish, so I do like you and use the Lacquer dip method.
That bottle stopper is just gorgeous Mav. Nice job.

thanks for the nice comments guys. I started out with a ca finish but it clouded up so i resanded down and went the laquer way. I pretty much have given up on ca for bottle stoppers. I either laquer dip em or wipe on poly em.

What effect(s) does the alcohol have on the lacquer finish? How about the poly?(If someone were to splash some during it's pour) Or do you put something on top of that finish to keep the alcohol from doing something bad?
Great figuring in that piece of wood!

Scott,
My understanding is that both lacquer and poly will not be affected at all by alcohol.
You could put a coat of wax on your stoppers, many do - I do - and it would offer an increased level of protection, but again - wax isn't forever. With handling - the wax will wear. Wax can always be reapplied if the owner desires, but many people do not maintain things as they probably should.
Would I wax them? I don't know - probably not. I wax my stoppers because I use either CA or Shellac on them.
If you do use a buffer or wax on them - be careful for heat build up. I was giving a quick spritz with Kyrlon acrylic spray over top of the shellac. I'd let those things dry for more than 24 hours even though it is the 15 min. kind of spray - the coat would melt and turn to pure chit when I took it to the buffer.
Lacquer and Poly are about the best in terms of protection that you can do.

from what I have read, laquer and poly are about the best you can use. I tell people when I sell them that they should be carefull and wipe off any wine/alcohol just to avoid any problems. I also tell them if they have problems I will gladly repair it for them. so far no problems.

Scott, Shellac is the finish that Alcohol will cause problems with. Therefore I stay away from Shellawax friction polish for bottle stoppers.
