Last 2 days I've been trying to finish up some pens I have had in progress. I'm trying to get caught up so I can start on a new (non-turning) project. Six pens total, some new, some similar to ones I've done before, but I took pics of all of them, so I will show them all. First is a Cigar pen in Black Chrome finish made out of Quilted Maple. This was some real "rescued firewood" but not from my wood pile Second is another Cigar using Oak burl that a friend gave me a while back. Third is a Pine Cone Cartridge pen. Fourth is something new. White Marble Trustone blank on a Rhodium Gatsby pen kit. Fifth is an interesting one. Same guy that gave me the Oak burl gave me a piece of Pine bark to try. Antique brass Saturn kit. And sixth is a Wall Street II Black Titanium kit using Turquoise Trustone.

I don't mind looking at 'more pens'. Pine bark?....whoda thunk you can make a pen outa pine bark? Lemme guess, lots of CA glue? I still can't get over what you do with pine cones, Doug. Those are just neater 'n hell. I think I recognize one of 'em.

they all look great doug, That oak burl is pretty sweet. I have not seen grain like that in oak before. and as always your pine cone is awesome.

Thanks for the replies Dave, Mav, Scott and Zac. Dave, you did indeed recognize one of them...hope you like it and yes, the Pine bark required CA stabilization. Even so, it started to peel apart when I pressed in the pen parts, so I don't think I will make anymore of them. The bark had some interesting "grain" and wonderful color and I was kinda hoping that I could combine the bark with a Pine Cone for some 2 barrrel pen kits, but probably not until I get a better method to stabilize the bark. Mav, I have never seen Oak with grain like that either. I think it was caused by a crotch or knot but there was no evidence of a knot in the piece I got. My friend just saw it when some guys were installing some cabinets and he thought it looked interesting. It was just a 3/4" x 3/4" offcut about 3 feet long with a couple of those "burl" looking spots in it. I wish I had some more of it. Scott, got your PM and I am wishing you luck on the Pine Cone turning - it should really look good on the twist cartridge pen kit. The hardest part will be keeping the white seeds from popping out on you. A sharp, sharp skew will be your best tool to use, with light cuts, lots a thin CA and a good amount of luck It will be tempting to sand to final diminsion, but that sometimes changes the way the cone looks - kinda clouds up the soft "grain" areas. Zac, I know. Hey, what? Nobody interested in the White Marble Trustone? It is very classy looking, especially with the black of the Gatsby kit, and it was easy to turn. I can highly recommend it. Thanks again for the comments guys.

They are all nice but you impressed us enough with the pine bark and cone that of course that is what we wanna hear about. I don't know how you managed to hold it together but I really like that pine bark one.

Doug, those are all just superb. Very well crafted and beautiful pens.
I'm trying to decide on a favorite and I've got it narrowed down to the Oak Burl or the White Marble Truestone. The Pinecone cartridge isn't in the mix only because I've seen those before from you.
I'm leaning towards the White Marble Truestone. I'll bet it doesn't stay on your display table for long.

Thanks Joel and Cody!
JB, I had to use CA to stabilize the Pine bark, but it held together very well while turning it - I just could not sand it at all - it does not sand evenly because some areas are much softer than others and it gets flat spots on it from sanding. I'm still hoping to find a way to use it in combination with pine cone.
Cody, that Oak burl is really nice wood, especially on a Cigar pen. For natural wood, that one is hard to beat.
