Well, I finally turned something. It's been months and it shows, too. 10" salt mill out of Bois d'Arc and 10" pepper mill out of Walnut, Deft finish. I turned the pepper mill first and don't really care for the shape but, oh well. I put a little more curve to the salt mill and like it better. I've got some more kits so I may turn some more. It doesn't take long and doesn't make near the mess that turning a bowl does.

You definitely got that elegant and graceful look down. Great job.

Nice job Cody. good selection of wood. Just curious what kind of salt do you put in salt mill. Rock salt maybe.

Cody,
Those real really good. I've put these on my "to do" list, but they are pretty far in the back. That Walnut sure is pretty. Bois d'arc is nice lookin' too - but in the pictures, the Walnut takes the cake IMO.
Nice Nice finish too.

Thanks guys.
Fred, I put sea salt in the salt mill. When I sell or give them away, Karen puts them in an Easter basket type thing with the peppercorn and sea salt included...ties a little bow on top and it looks really good. I had a set bring $250 at a benefit auction.

What size stock do you start with? 1.5x1.5/2x2/bigger?
I really like the shape of the lighter colored wood(Bois d'Arc), the curves just look so much better. Then again, I like the simple line of the walnut too!
Crud! I can't critique for crap! I like everything!!!
Scott ($250 for a set....WOW!) B

both look great. I cant decide on which one I like better. I like the shapes of both. cant argue with wood choice either.

Very nice set Cody. I can't decide which shape I like better either...I like the round portion on the Walnut better than the Bodark one,,,the bodies...I like them both!

Thanks again.
Scott, the instructions say to start with a 2 3/4" square blank. I use a 3" blank. For a 10" mill, I start with it 12" long. that gives me room to cut a tenon on the top end and turn it round without having to go through a bunch of gyrations.

On the topic of what to fill them with . . . every time I find myself down PA way (they sell off a trailer at the Pocono Bazaar), I deal with these guys: www.pureandnaturalspices.com/store/Peppers-Salts.htmlThat's a link to their salt and pepper page, but they sell a lot more . . . you'd want 'whole' pepper and 'course' sea salt for mills . . . and they have some fantastic blends on the cheap if you use a lot of any of those . . . also great prices on things like ground cayenne and whole nutmeg . . . I use their stuff to make my own BBQ rubs, home-canned pickles and such. Real nice people, they are a true Mom & Pop operation and worthy of supporting! Back to the mills . . . I love the set you made . . . and I want to do my own one day . . . but I fear the vortex!
