I called a saw mill today thats bout 20 miles from me and the local owner has sold it to some chitarse from dallas. I was quoated 4.50 per board foot for some walnut. Is that a good price? Red Oak and Ash was 2.35 a board foot. Im thinkin of buildin some really nice animal caskets out of something other than pine. Any input would be appreciated. All of the quotes were for 1x6 material Boodrow

Boodrow, that's pretty high unless it's super premium stuff. How much walnut do you need and when do you need it? I'm pretty sure I can get it cheaper from my supplier but I gotta order $300 worth for them to ship it. If you don't need it too soon I could add it onto my next order. Or, if you don't need much, I could give you some from my personal stash.

Was that Thurman's?
$4.50 per bf for Walnut in East Texas is a good price. M&G Sawmill in Huntsville has it listed at $4.25 for Select but that's a 250 mile round trip.
You can always buy some locally from Gulf States Lumber at $7.00 to $8.00 per bf. ;D

I have it soo good.... I think I pay.... around 3.50 /bf for anything under 6' in length. Anything over 6' is 25% more. Near same price for Cherry.'
Of course, it's about 120 miles round trip.

I pay $3 bf for walnut, but it is probably a 200 mile round trip. And quality is only decent. It pushes $5 bf localy. I always buy at least $300 when I buy lumber. I have to make it worth the trip.

I didn't get any Walnut but I paid $.90 a bf for knotty Alder, $1.20 a bf for red oak, and a little over $2 a bf for maple. I like Central because they piggyback a fork lift on their truck and carry all the lumber up to the shop. They've got free delivery on orders over $300. www.centralhardwoods.com/I also like Brazos Forest Products. www.brazosfp.com/aboutus.htmlAnother option is Sweeny Hardwoods. www.woodfinder.com/listings/005482.phpAlways call and get price quotes to find which one is cheaper at a given time. Their prices tend to float up and down a lot.

If I were to build with walnut (my wife doesn't care for the look of walnut, though I like it), I'd pay upwards of $6.85, starting with 4/4 rough. Black walnut is not very common up in New England and I imagine it all has to be trucked in, so $4.50/bdft would be a great price up this way.

I can't touch any decent hardwood for much less than $5-$9 per board foot.
It just kills me when a poster says $2.85 per foot for Walnut.
Yeah I wanna know THAT guy too - but it's probably 1500 miles each way.
I just bought some Purvian Wanlut - on a closeout special at $3.55 per foot - but that's a once in a lifetime special here.
Walnut here is likely to be $7.00 a foot.

Same here walnut is 7.00 or more per board foot. I am always on the look out for a deal. I don't have enough room to store a huge wholesale order of it. I have a 3+ stall garage but I also park 3 cars in it. I know crazy.

Wish I was closer to Lindale, Mark. I have been going to drop by a local cabinet maker here to see if I could order some lumber thru him but haven't gotten to it yet. My dad and another guy used to have a cabinet shop on the side and ordered thru Paxton's that was out of Ft Worth at the time but they are no longer there. The closest Paxton's is in San Antonio now. I bought some poplar at a place in Dallas a while back from a place called Woodworld but next time I think I will check out Central.

I think my old boss used to order from Woodworld too. He liked them the best but then they got bought out by Hogan Hardwoods and the service went to crap. Brazos then bought the three Hogan locations in Texas about two years ago and they've got pretty good service.

I also order my hardwood from Brazos but out of the Austin location. I will be ordering 220bf of poplar and 200bf of pecan from them tomorrow for a project I have coming up. The delivery is not free to Corpus Christi but just about, $25. It used to be free back when Paxton owned the operation if you ordered over $300 and then it went to $9 with Hogan. I still do not think $25 is too bad at all, I could not drive to Austin and back for just $25... I am just glad they have kept my account information thought all the transitions as it makes ordering alot easier.

I've not shopped there since right after they changed from Paxton's to Hogan's. I found a less expensive source that is closer to my house (as well as almost on the way home from my old job). Fine Lumber and Plywood is a full service hardwood lumber dealer. I think they only deliver in the immediate area, though.

Too bad you're so far away. They practically give away Black Walnut around here. I saw some at a local lumber yard that was dried to 6-8* humidity, and it was around $2.50 bd ft. IIRC.
