I'm thinking about building a cyclone dust collector. I've found the plans. I'm just trying to figgure out how is best to roll 18Gauge sheet metal. I'm planing on welding it together. Any Ideas?

What is the diameter? Could you cut a circle(s) from MDF or plywood and use them as a jig to wrap the metal around? Is there a sheet metal shop nearby that could do this for you? Just a couple of ideas....

18ga??? Holly cow!!! I built mine out of 24ga and soldered it together. I also had an advantage as my Dad was a sheetmetal worker and I had the use of there machines and Dads experience. That made it a whole lot easier for me.

Is 18 too heavy? I know I could make itout of 20 much easier, but I want it to last ummmmmm 55 to 60 years.

I think 20ga would last dozens more years than that - you may have to coat the incoming bend there with something ... i've seen reports on forums of that being a high-wear spot was the dust first comes into the cyclone and starts making the round.
Pentz says use 24ga ...

I built one out of 18 gauge since anything under that is a pita to weld. As far as rolling it, I suggest going to a local sheetmetal shop. I know that we would roll it for you for very little cost if you pay cash so we don't have to do an invoice. Probably do it for free since it would only take a few minutes to do.

Oh come on. An invoice costs the company upwards of $25 to run through the system which cost goes to the customer. Cash goes into the petty cash drawer for shop supplies. We do very little for single people really, but once every year or two someone wanders in off the street.

I sincerely believe it will fall apart in days...unless...you use 1/4" plate stainless steel, and have it sanitary welded by a certified stainless steel welder. ;D

make it out of aluminum and you'll never get sparks from the occasional nail to blow yer shop up ... That'd take a nice TIG welder, fur sure

Very cool! Please take as many photos as you can (or want to) - we love these projects! Plus, it lets you work out all the kinks before I start building mine
