This is Maine apple trunk - got it on eBay like 4 years ago. We needed a gift for my wife's aunt and uncle for hosting us in their home all last week while we were in Florida (stealth gloat). It's about 5"x5", I think, though I didn't measure it. I had a heck of a time with that blank. The weight was terribly off-center and I think my lathe walked about 3 feet in total. I had to keep pulling it back to where it was supposed to be. I know the picture quality is terrible. I turned this a couple weeks ago, but my wife wrapped it up before I could get some pictures. I had to surreptitiously take pictures at the relatives' house when nobody was looking. The pics with the flash looked terrible, and without a flash or tripod they look fuzzy. Oh well. You still get a good hint at the color and figure in the wood.

If I was a lathe guy, that's more of what I'd be interested in. (Not to take anything from the pen guys)
I'm thinking some like that would be just about as tough as it gets...outa balance, cracked, free form edges.....
I'm impressed.

That is one AWESOME bowl! Wasn't it a little scary with it possible to fly apart while turning it? Sure looks NICE... I like the natural edges and inlets on the edges!

Thanks! Wasn't it a little scary with it possible to fly apart while turning it? Not really. It didn't really seem to me that it was going to fly apart. I wasn't really happy with my finish on this one, but I was getting to the point where I was afraid to take any more cuts for fear of a "just one last cut"-catch.

Great little bowl, Rob and it's neat to see some turnings other than pens here, too. The more variety, the better I say.
I've read that Apple isn't the easiest to turn or to keep from cracking but it appears you succeeded on both counts. Thanks for showing.

The crack gives the bowl an antique look, and some character.
Question: What do you use to keep the bark from slinging off while turning? Also, did you use a chuck to hold the bowl during the 'turn'?

Question: What do you use to keep the bark from slinging off while turning? Also, did you use a chuck to hold the bowl during the 'turn'? I didn't need to use anything. That bark wasn't coming off, noway, nohow. I used my Talon chuck to hold the bowl. I love the Talon. That thing is great.

The best part is: I still have 2-3 more feet of trunk to work with.
