That I turned some time back. Turned from dry Manitoba Maple. Measures 2-1/4" Deep and 7-1/8" Diameter. I don't have the proper chisels for bowl turning but I thought what the hay, I'll try it with my 1/2" Spindle Gouge and 1/4" Round Nose Scraper. While I still had in the chuck I sanded to 400 grit, applied 2 coats of Minwax Gloss Wipe On Poly, rubbed down with super fine steel wool between coats, applied 6 coats of Minwax Satin Wipe On Ploy and polished with Hut Ultra Gloss. Made a doughnut chuck and removed the tenon to make a foot for the bowl bottom and finished the foot with Minwax Satin Wipe On Poly. I might have to go a buy the proper chisels for bowl turning to see if future bowls will be easier to turn and and finish better. As always question, comments and or suggestions appreciated. Thanks for looking. Les

Wow Mighty fine for a first, and especially with the tools you had. If you got that result with marginal tools (for bowl turnin' anyway), the bowl gouge will primarily make it faster to produce. Your finishes are beautiful on your pens, and obviously the same on your bowl. Thanks, Mark

Let's see.....
Nice symetrical curve Grain centered in bowl Wall thickness is in good proportion to bowl diameter Foot app. 1/3 of diameter and slightly concave Finish is outstanding
I think you've got the hang of this bowl turning, Les. ;D
Now, get a bowl gouge before you turn another one. That spindle gouge could become a pretzel if you get a bad catch.

I like seeing a lot of grain. This definately fits my taste and nice work on the piece. I agree the finish looks really good. You say you had the wrong tools but I cannot see anythign wrong with the piece.
