I need to cut a piece of mother of pearl into a handful of 1.8"x1/4"x1/1/4" pieces. Any recommendation as to what saw,saw blade I should use would be appreciated.

Wow, tough one! My best guess would be a jeweler's saw with a fine carbide wire-type blade.

A little net searching says a jeweler's saw is the best tool but the blade doesn't have to be special...use a medium jeweler's blade so that breakage is minimized.
You will also need to make a vee-notch cutting table. Keep the stock centered over the point of the vee and make sure tha blade is cutting on the down stroke.

Thanks guys. Now I have to find a jeweler's saw. I'm doing this for my dear brother. I hope the saw is not too expensive.

Very good! That's not too bad at all!
... do you need a vise or something to hold it while cutting?
