I'm partial to Stanley type 10-11 (1910-1918) vintage hand planes as users because thy fettle quickly, have many nice detail features, and generally perform as well as the later Bed Rock models. Feeling bold I bought a restorable #8 on Ebay, the seller was nice and agreed to remove the near perfect tote so that it would survive shipping. ;D Then I anxiously waited .... until this afternoon. The lateral lever which is prone to shipping damage is pristine but the cast iron, not so much.

Oh. That. Hurts.
Shipper's responsible for damages, right? So... they have to... replace it? How do they do that???

What a bloody shame. It can be welded with a nickel rod but I doubt one could do it accurately enough to get it usable With something equally good.... hmm... Lie Nielsen

Man, that REALLY sucks!!
Well, maybe you always wanted one of the Stanley 8- bullnose jointers?
I think it is the sellers fault, though. He put the red and white, "throw me around the loading dock" sticker on it.

Ohhh - looks like you got screwed.
FRAGILE - on the box means that the box will be handled at least somewhat gently. The box looks like in good condition.
It doesn't look like nearly enough packing material.
Anyway - that plane would take some serious hammering to get in broken in half like that.
I bought a #7 and a #5 from EBAY. They were both placed in the same box with even less packing material then you have there. The box arrived broken, and the planes almost falling out - but not broken.
Does the seller have any negative feedback on that sort of problem?
In my opinion - with only limited information, from the pic -- the seller knew it was seriously cracked - and didn't reveal the crack through the advertisement.
Therefore - it was sold - "not as advertised". You should get the seller to give a full refund - including return shipping.

In college, I worked as a package handler for FedEx Ground. First off, fragile stickers very rarely get seen. You aren't able to do much reading when a box is flying off the belt every three seconds. It's like being in a giant game of 3D tetris on the hardest level. What probably happened was that the tape failed on one of the ends, the plane slid out of the package and fell onto the concrete loading dock. There is a protocol for handling stuff like this, but it could be that the protocol was skipped and the plane was repackaged and sent on.

Jerry I was thinking it could become a distinctive infill sanding block.
Judging by the internal wrapping it would be very difficult to have wrapped this thing so well after it broke; I'm confident it was in one piece when it left the seller's hands. The break is bright and crystalline just like non-ductile cast iron should be. The break appears to be somewhat in torsional mode so I'd guess it landed on a corner, 8 pounds of iron U-channel can crush through a lot of wadded newspaper in a hurry if it falls 3-4 feet as I'm sure Stretch can attest.
Leo, I believe this seller is honest and will come through with a mutually agreeable solution. The fractures are very fresh, lacking the graying or corrosion byproducts normally found in an old crack.
I guess I'll have to wait another day yet for a response from the seller.

I'd file a claim with the shipping company

I did that and they replied in yesterday's mail that my claim is rejected as the shipper must file the claim.

Time to contact the seller & complain & have them file the claim with the shipper. At this point, the seller's still liable 'cause what you got wasn't what they described.
