I was cutting some wood to length for firewood when I came across a piece of branch that turned an almost perfect 90-degree angle. I cut the arms off of the angle and found some really crazy grain, so I then cut the arms and the angle lengthwise to make some turning blanks. As the wood had been sitting in the backyard for 6-8 months, I (mistakenly) assumed that it would no longer be 'green' and would therefore be OK for turning and finishing. Needless to say, it was still quite green and, after I overzealously turned a small bowl to finished state, warped and cracked all to hell. Anyway, that all said, check out the crazy grain - and small amount of spalting - on this warped and cracked bowl. A couple coats of Danish Oil is all it's finished with - don't think I'm going to bother with anything more than that. I've got 4 or 5 more small Anchorsealed blanks that I'm letting dry a bit more before I try turning them.

I actually like the somewhat crazy look, but then some folks would say I've lost a goodly number of my marbles. ;D The grain is fantastic and even the sort of odd, off balance shape is appealing to me.

I absolutely love that kind of wood too. Gorgeous!
Too bad it warped and cracked, but like Jerry said, it has a certain appeal to it.
I've heard that to air dry green wood requires 1 year for each inch of thickness. However, I've has some luck in speeding that process up by rough turning and then soaking the wood in Denatured Alcohol (DNA) for 24 hours and then finish turning the bowl after 6 weeks or so. I tried the boiling method too and it seems to work also, but it is a lot more effort than using DNA. Wanna try that on one of your remaining blanks?

I like the grain....a lot..... and actually - that crack almost looks..... "artsy" - I'd keep it around as a reminder if nothing else!

Looks like a "catch-all" bowl to me. Good enough for keys, watches, etc.

Thanks all. Maybe I'll try turning something from one of the other pieces and give it the DNA treatment and see what happens.
I'm not planning on throwing this one out, just saying that I don't think I'll be giving it away as a gift or anything...

That is some awesome grain and combined with the spalting, it's really unique. Is that Birch?

No idea what kind of wood it is but don't think it's birch. I'll get a pic of the other (bark-on) blanks next time I get a chance.
This was one of the 'angle' pieces. I cut it kind of off-center when I cut it in half, so the other half is deeper than this one. That one should make a really cool bowl once it's turned.

That...is art by nature. I like the character of warped bowls. Very cool bowl in my opinion.

I agree with the others. the grain is really cool, would be great for a key/wallet holder. I hope you figure out what kind of wood it is, cause I know we all want to know.
