Joe - for real? That's very seriously eyecatching! Plywood scraps? How did you... go about... cutting the angle? Bandsaw, followed by a lot of sanding to take off the saw marks?

Yep... there is no trick photography here... that is for REAL.
I will eventually start another thread on the "Inspiration" and tell the complete story.
Yes... all scraps... cut with band saw... and sanding which wasn't so bad... a very simple procedure... with results that, to me, were very unexpected. Finishing took longer than making them! (as usual)

Gluing all the ply together was more than I expected... although it wasn't was very hard... went smoothly... Will try to get the whole story done today... or maybe by w/e... I don't rush anymore...

Mike, Thank you! Each set is exactly the same except for the direction of the Middle strip... My first thought was with it Vertically... then, as an After Thought, made one with it Horizontally! Now, when they're on a shelf, you see more of the outside edge than the middle slanted face... I like the Horiz. strip better because it breaks it up while on the shelf! Sure glad I tried it that way...

I keep looking at these Joe, they are nice.
I cannot figure out how you got such a nice joint between the opposing wood pieces with just sanding. Or did you take that end grain right from the TS to glue up, then sand? Did you joint the end grain piece?

I'll try to get the complete writeup done very soon. After the Parts (cut-up on BS) were glued up, I cleaned them up on the Band Saw... Glued some more.... no special sanding, etc. Ended up with a cube about 3" x 5.75" x 5.875" Drew a line Catty Cornered... about 3/8" from the sharp corner. (to yield two identical pieces) Cut it on BS... Sanded, etc. Done. Finished Dim's: 3" D x 5" H x 4.75 W They did turnout better than I expected. Stay tuned for the complete writeup & picures...

Hi Zac,
Inspiration: A friend asked if I could make a bracket for a motion censor. He needed one that would tilt it downward as to not pickup blowing tree limbs which were giving him false hits. He gave me the dimensions of 4x4x2... cut in half from corner to corner to get the angle.
I happened to have a chunk of glued-up plywood leftover from making a jig... I used it... As it turned out, I ended up with two almost identical 'brackets'... so I gave them to him in case he had another censor to mount the same way.
He liked the design so much he said he was going to keep it and use it on a book shelf... it was not Finished... I told him that I would Finish it for him if he wanted me to... He said yes... He said he liked Cherry. I had some!
After looking at it a little, I agreed, it looked pretty good for a small bookend.
I thought, what the heck... I will cut & glue some more ply to make two sets of bookends... I can Finish them along with his!
So, I made two sets... one with a Vertical center strip & one with a Horiz. center strip. The rest is history...
I stained them with Watco Cherry Danish Oil... Topped it off with 4-5 coats of Arm-R-Seal - Glossy.
Crazy way to get 'inspired'... Yes?

Still can't figure out how you got it to cut without any voids. I normally cut plywood and I have a few small chunks fall out.

Joe - that was the most round-about point of inspiration I think has ever been told!! lol - it's cool though....hey - we don't always pick where we get our ideas from - but who can argue when they turn out well!! I'm sure someone will see yours, or his - book ends and ask about them.... maybe even ask for a set of them! They look really nice.

It's not the most expensive cabinet grade either... It IS a good grade of ply that is economical as well as, for the most part, Voidless! I love it! One of the steps, WAS to use Minwax's Stainable wood filler to FILL little voids wherever they were... ;D Then, do the Final sanding before staining. ;D

I made sure the blade was 90* to the table... I have also found that Slowness is the KEY to a good accurate cut... let the Blade cut & do not FORCE / Rush it. All of the Glue-up Clean-ups were also done with the band saw... followed by sanding. ... my blade really needs to be changed... getting a little dull... Glad it helps you.
