Wow, very, very cool. First time I think I've seen a box scraper plane in use.

That was VERY interesting!
Thank you!
It looks like I coulda been one of those kids.. age wise...
Cool use of the axe & adz... Cool sharpening system too! Nothing fancy required!
Good ole hand tools... draw knives, planes, etc.
Those good ole days... ;D ;D
I wonder why that was the LAST one made... Those kids didn't remember how to do it? ... or didn't want to do it?

That may have been the last dug-out priogue made but certainly not the last pirogue. They are still made and sold all over South Louisiana.
BTW, it's pronounced pee-row in case you didn't know.
Remember Hank Williams' song Jambalya?
"Goodbye Joe, me gotta go, me oh my oh Me gotta go pole that pirogue down the bayou"

What would be the wood of choice and I'll bet I could capsize one faster than you could.

Given the rot resistance and the proliferation of cypress trees in boggy and swampy areas as well as the diameter that the trees attain, I'd think Cypress would be a good choice. Fairly light and soft enough to work pretty easily, too.

Most of the eastern red cedar I can get around here is so full of knots as to make it unusable for making strips for a strip canoe. I can get pretty clear cypress from a place here and, if I get a round tuit, figured I'd use cypress.

That sure was an awesome video.
I love these sorts of things.
I put that on the same level as Dick Prenokee - Alone in the wilderness.
We so often get so hung up on how to do stuff with power tools. All to often it is so easy and sometimes easier to do some stuff with hand tools.
Loved it - thanks Stretch
