Hi folks,
I had a toilet that wouldn't hold water, so I decided to replace it. I bought a nice toilet, got it home and tore into the box, only to discover that I don't have clearance for it ... looks like a 10" rough in measuring from the bolts. Sheesh.
Any recommendations on a close-quarters toilet, or even a source. I'm looking on the HD website and I don't even see the rough-in spec anywhere. Any help appreciated.

I had to grab a tape measure and framing square to evaluate the floor display commodes at HD. They did carry close clearance stools a few years back and likely still do.

Forget the tape measure. Just ask for a toilet with a 10" set back. A few years ago, the plumbing guy in my local HD was rather knowledgeable. You'll have a choice of maybe 2, if you're lucky 3. I was told that nobody makes an elongated bowl in a 10" set back.
You might be able to special order but the special order fee is outrageous!

Is there a plumbing supply place near you? It might be cheaper to find one there than to special order one. All of the ones here will sell to the public as well as plumbers.

Why did the old toilet leak water?
Was it broken?
I had a toilet with a similar problem... ended up replacing it.
As I was installing the New one, I noticed what was wrong with the OLD one! There is a simple gasket between the Tank and the Bowl. It had worn out and was allowing water from the tank to go directly to the floor. Getting a new gasket would have fixed it! Too late, I installed the new one. ;D ;D ;D
Check it out... if not too late... ;D

Every time I glance through the threads and see this one I see:
Toilet tissue.

There is a washer intended to be used on a toilet that bolts to the wall. It is called a "Spud" washer. If you put the washer between the stool and tank the leak problem is prevented. I've had plumbers tell me that the washer is not necessary. But it stops the leak.

Yep, it was a simple washer... BUT, we also went from a 3+ gal. tank to the new 1.8 (or whatever they are) to save water... it was time for that anyway... I installed two toilets.

Larry, thanks for noticing Guys, there was no visible leak and no structural evidence of the leak once we pulled the commode ... leading me to believe that there was an internal crack that wasn't allowing the bowl to hold water. Might be wrong, but the old one is out. I got a special order from the building supply store in town ... costly but convenient. It's a good 45 minutes to anything else.
