OK for all u math gurus on here I have a question that yall can help me figure out. I have a 1x6 that is actually 5 1/2 inches wide. I want to cut two coves spaced equally between the top , bottom and center of the piece of wood. The blade is a 10" blade. So if someone could help me figure the diameter of the cut to even space it to have 3 flat areas. One on top , one in the center and one on the bottom I would dance at ur next weddin. I want to also make the cove 3/16 deep on the 2 cuts. Boodrow

If you want the coves the same width as the flats, then it works out to er, hold on a minute...about 1 3/32".

If the coves are to have the same width as the flats, you need to divide the 5 1/2 " width of the board by 5 which gives you 1.1 " for the width of the cove. According to the calculator on this page the radius for an arc with a height of 3/16" will be ~ .9" so the diameter will be ~ 1.8"

If the coves are to be 1.8" wide then the flats will have to be about 5/8".

If the coves are to be 1.8" wide then the flats will have to be about 5/8". I think Jerry is talking about the diameter of the circle that the arc of the cove is a part of. I think the point is that it's going to be hard to get a 3/16" deep arc that is only 1 1/8" wide out of a table saw blade. My method of choice would be using a large roundnose bit on the router table. So Boodrow, if you can't get it to work on your table saw and don't have a router bit big enough, I've got a big round nose bit we could use. You could bring your lumber up to my place and we could get it done.

If the coves are to be 1.8" wide then the flats will have to be about 5/8". Stretch nailed it. I thought that was what Boo was asking. I came up with the flats and coves being equal, their width would be 1.1" which is right at the 1 3/32 (1.09375") you came up with. It'll be a real PITA to get a cove cut with a 10" blade down to a diameter just under 2". The fence is gonna be just a smidge off of parallel to the blade to do it. Sure there's a formula somewhere for calculating that, but . . . Or maybe cut some teeth into a blade stiffener of the right diameter.

Like this, right? The spacing is 1.1", the coves are 1.8" diameter.

Thanks fellers , I think all of yall are correct. The more I think about it the more PITA it will be to try to cut these on a table saw. I will do some soul searchin and see if I want to screw up a bunch of scraps tryin to get this set up rite, if not I mite holler at u stretch and come up to ur shop. Tim the drawing is just what I want it to look like. Thanks again Boodrow
