Hello all, having recently joined the unemployed ranks, lay off, I am getting ready to do a 3 day show at the end of April. I am hoping to get 12-15 bandsaw boxes and 7-10 bean bag toss games ready. I have a stash of cedar outdoor pieces and a couple of custom dog houses done, cute things with cedar shingles and porchs with railings. What I need is some small items in the 15-30 dollar range like wine stoppers and maybe some pens. So I was thinking maybe some of you that do some shows would like to make some trades, bansdsaw boxes or beanbag games for small items I could sell at the show? Have not worked out all the details yet but thought if anyone has any interest maybe we could figure it out.
Thanks, Les

I'm definitely interested in the band saw boxes. Those would make a great addition to my display table. Do you have an idea of what kind of pens you would be interested in?

I may be interested (first of all - sorry to hear about the layoff, that sucks!) - the only thing that concerns me is shipping....it's easy and relatively cheap to ship a few pens or bottle stoppers - probably not quite as cheap to ship a bandsaw box, and DEFINITELY not a beanbag game!
I, also, am real interested in a BS box - you come up with some more details and I would be willing to offer up some pens or bottle stoppers. I'm from IL for a reference. You can keep posting on this thread or go to PM's - either is fine with me.
I agree with Doug - SOOO many pen choices, you have any ideas on what you are looking for?

Thanks for the interest guys, I will do some research and see what some of the costs would be for shipping. Right now I am currently making 4 styles of the boxes and am making custom beanbag games. We would have to figure out a fair value and how we would cover shipping. Maybe we take the fair value of a box + shipping to you, then you equal that value back with shipping figured in to the value of your items? Just thinking out loud here, sorry. I am open to any and all thoughts on this.
Thanks, Les

I thought I remembered your post about the bandsaw boxes you made and I went back and looked at them. They are gorgeous! And I wondered if they could be made to hold several pens in each drawer? I can see possibilities with something like that in addition to the style you showed pics of. I wonder how many of those boxes would fit in a flat rate box...might not be too bad for shipping costs that way. Here is a link to a flicker site that I have some pen pictures on. I don't keep it up to date, but it will give you some ideas about the different kinds of pens that can be made. www.flickr.com/photos/rescued_firewood/sets/72157622775898355/

I just searched for you post about BS boxes - I found the "xmas gifts" post - I remember those, they ARE beautiful!!!
Not really sure what you had in mind for trades - but I'd totally be open. Mull it around - come up with something, post it or PM it. I'd love to be able to offer one up (heck, may even keep one for myself!)

Les, You might also think about some sort of consignment type deal where folks could send you pens on consignment to have when you go to shows. You could sell them at some retail price at the show, and then return some wholesale amount to the supplier as the pens sold. Might be a better deal, in the end, for you and folks who enjoy making the pens but not doing the work of showing and selling could make out nicely as well.

It would be a Win Win program!

.....*shrugs*..... I don't have a fancy site showcasing my pieces Zac I have been meaning to mention this...FLICKR allows free storage of pics and has some nice features for creating different folders. It is free and fairly easy to use and I have linke to it several times in an email to a potential customer for showing them what the possibilities are. I intended to keep a folder of available pens up to date, but that has not really been a priority and it seems like people enjoy seeing the pics. My latest sale of a WS II Turquoise pen was directly attributable to that FLICKR site. If you want to have something in between a full blown website and just sending out pics in emails, FLICKR makes some sense to use. Here is my home page on FLICKR which shows all the folders...now if I could just make myself keep it up to date, it would really be useful. www.flickr.com/photos/rescued_firewood/sets/

You know - I may end up using something like that once I get a better photo-staging area down. Really just haven't had time to work on it.
I do like your flickr page a lot - looks real nice. Honestly - IMO, I wouldn't monkey with trying to keep an "up-to-date" list of what you have in terms of pictures.... you could pretty much make any kit/blank combo again - well.... mostly...... some would be a little different.... I guess some real specialty pieces couldn't necessarily be made twice.... I dunno, I think the more pictures - the better, even if some of them are sold.

Flickr does limit you to the amount of photo's you can add in a months time. Forget the number, but I've hit the limit once or twice during birding season!
Not sure about PhotoBucket?

FLICKR limits you to 100MB of pics per month on the free version. The trick is to resize the pics before uploading them. I do that anyway so I can use them in email and posting to WoW. I do still keep the original on my computer just in case, but the resized pics get loaded to FLICKR are only about 100KB or less each. If my math is correct, that would mean roughly 1000 pics per month.
Also, Photostream views are limited to the 200 most recent images. I am not sure what that means exactly, but I have not had to figure it out yet. It almost sounds like you can only view the 200 most recent pics on the free version.
Zac, I think you are right that I should not worry about keeping it up to date on what is available, but just have a photo gallery type setup. I'll probably do that.

Most people would not be able to tell the difference between the BOW picture and the BOW they received in the mail, but especially if you tell them "the pictured pen is sold, I can make another very similar" they probably wouldn't mind at all.
I've not really had this problem so I can't say for sure!! Sure would be nice to sell pens that fast!
