Anybody have any experiences or advise about HF dust collectors. After my bout with the Legionaires disease last year, I'm getting kinda cautious about my lungs now. Been watching CL but haven't found anything local. Not sure if the local store has them or not. Might need to make a trip to town tomorrow to see.

Don't have any experience with HF dust collector but the 2hp model seems to please a lot of people. Just want to say that a dust collector is one of the best addition to a workshop that you can buy. I had a choice, get one or stay out of the shop. I got the Grizzly 1029Z and it sucks pretty good. I vent it outside which probably helps.

I have a Griz - I heard the 2HP HF is the best money you can spend on that size DC, lot's seem real happy - plus - ask around here. HF will honor ANY price they've ever had in a catalog or something crazy good like that. Coupons that are old and "expired" - you shouldn't have a problem. You'll need the smaller micron bags though - these guys will set you up good and fit!

I've got the HF 2HP DC. Only one thing I can say about it - DON'T LET CATS GET NEAR THE INTAKE. ... and if you do, make sure they have peed, etc. before getting too close to it... ;D ;D

I've had one for 3 or 4 years now. It sucks. In a good way. I don't think you can go wrong especially at the $150 price that there was a coupon floating around for. Get the Wyn filter and made a Thein Baffle for it. Then you got a solid setup for under $250.

I did a lot of research because of COPD which now has the shop closed and most equipment sold off. If you don't get the particulates down to where they need to be with a DC,,,,,,,, then get a respirator that will get it there. www.billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/index.cfmdick

Dick gave you a link to some great information. THAT is definately worth at least KNOWING about. But it's like blade guards on a table saw.
I have a 2 hp Harbor Freight dust collector.
Yes, it is well worth the money - but is is NOT the best you can get.
NO - is does NOT protect you in the manner that Dick's link explains.
NOW - the other part of dust collection is the "collection" part. MOST machines (not the dust collector) do NOT have good dust collection recepticals on them.
For instance - put the most best dust collection system in the world and attach it to the stupid 4" attachmant on the bottom of a contractors table saw - and get nothing for results.
SOME machines work well. My planer, Router table, Jointer are all great.
Soo - while YES - the Harbor Freight 2 hp dust collector is pretty good value foe the morey - there is far more to dust collection than just the dust colllector itself.
FAR MORE

The 2 hp HF collector is a good chip collector and with a Wynn filter, it will keep your shop air much cleaner. But, no collector will do it all. Even with a quality DC moving 400 cfm or more at the tool, it's difficult to collect all the dust from the saws. The band saw and miter saw in particular are big dust contributors to the shop air. For the dust that escapes the DC, you really need an air cleaner, too, if you are concerned about respirating the small particles.
Bill Pentz's site gives a lot of info and advice concerning dust collection but a large part of that info is unsubstantiated and, to be frank, unscientific. I'd bear that in mind when perusing his site.
But, the fact remains that wood dust is not healthy to breathe and it can be really bad for those individuals who already have or develop an allergy or reaction to certain woods. The only sure protection is a respirator.

So true,,,,I had all 3,,, DC, AF and respirator all of which filtered down to.3 microns and I still had dust problems of course the COPD is not forgiving. If I cheated at all with any it would tag me.

I have had the unit for quite a few years and used the heck out of it. No problems. Money well spent. I mounted the motor and impeller on top of a 35 gal. drum and it does a pretty amazing job of keeping stuff from ever getting to the filter. It also keeps chips and anything else from hitting the impellers. I REALLY need to upgrade the filter and plan to do that soon. That is the biggest thing. If your dust collector does not have a good filter (much better then the setup that ships with the HF DC) then it is not a dust collector, but a dust mover. The fine stuff is what you really need to collect and it is what comes back out the bag.

I have a HF DC and it gets the job done. I have an 18" planer and the DC keeps up with it. I recently added the Wynn filter and the baffle and it works MUCH better. This upgrade is well worth the costs and time to do.

Went by the local HF last Friday and they were out of stock. Lady said truck will be in Monday with another. Got a 20% coupon off in the new issue of Wood magazine. Went by today and none came in on the truck. Gonna check back again tomorrow just to see if the lady knew what she was talking about....lol.

I also have the HF DC and for the money...it's worth it! I also made a ceiling mounted air filter from an old telcom rack cooling fan. It came in a 6x19" frame with a pre-filter. All I had to do was make a box and add some replaceable higher efficiency filters.

The HF by me will take your name and reserve the item you want when they are out. When the item comes in they put your name on it and call you.

October issue of Wood magazine, page 77 has a coupon good through 12/25/09, where you can get this dust collector for $139.99. The wife just lost her job(after 23 yrs. they closed the doors) & I'm disabled, but I'm going to try my dangest to get one to replace the little portable Delta I have.

Maybe I should be glad they didn't have them when I went in the other day. 110.00 off is better than the 15% coupon I had. Now if I can just get them to get one in. Gonna go down and get them to commit to getting one in now. Thanks for the info.
