This little gem came from deepsplinter! Thanks! Spalted Sycamore with gun metal finish. As usual - the pictures don't do it justice, a real nice amount of that dark black "inky" looking lines running through it - real nice stuff! Thanks, Zac

Hot dang! Look at the curves on that one! That's definitely some nice looking wood porn Zac. Beautiful wood and a nicely made pen.

Zac, you'll want to kill me..... I was doing a cabinet job for a guy awhile back (the guy that turned donuts in his living room) and used that qtr-sawn sycamore for the drawer sides. I didn't want any spalting in the drawers. Spalting looks great most places, but not in your drawers (there's a joke there somewhere, but I can't come up with one ), so I cut around it and probably ended up burning it. Lotta pens went up in smoke. I'm sooo sorry.

You're right Dave - I damn near spalted in my drawers when I read your post! Nah, it's fine. Hey - sometimes you just can't hold onto scraps forever, no matter how many pen turners you know. For anyone who thinks they are bad about keeping scraps around - what do you think it's like for people who turn pens??? lol - I just pulled out a scrap piece of wood that's been sitting in a big metal trash can for over a year - I cut a section of it and turned a cone type, friction fit thing to hold brass casings while I polish them with my dremel.... No worries man. Hopefully we've got you straightened out about throwing away the center folds of a board! Zac

I have heated my present home almost exclusively with wood for over 20 years - no telling how much beautiful pen material went up in smoke before I even knew what a lathe was. I still have a slight hesitation when putting another log on the fire - my wife burst out laughing the other day when she saw me looking a piece of firewood over carefully before throwing it in the stove. She knew exactly what I was thinking ;D
