Alright, what's the secret to turning this stuff!?!?
Sharp chisels....check! Adequate speed....check!
Chunks being ripped from the stock....yup! Gonna have a lot of sanding to get rid of these chunks.... Don't think I'm going to like turning this stuff too much!
Anyone got a secret they want to share?
Scott (like turning a cork, but softer) B

Bottom line - it sucks! I could never get a full pen turned out of it - I finally threw in the towel for now. Maybe another day, never tried a spindle or stopper blank. Zac

Here's one I made a while back (second from the right) - it took a LOT of hard work and a VERY sharp skew to do it. I shaved the barest pieces with the razor sharp skew (I usually prefer a gouge, but they just couldn't turn it), and finished with sandpaper... Not a fun process, but a nice pen when it's done! Hang in there! Andrew

I've never turned palm... but I HAVE turned banksia. That's crazy frustrating, too, 'cause them little red hairs on the surface DON'T TURN AWAY as you turn it down! They're shot alla' way through. It's stabilize or die...

Congrats Scott. You gotter done. I never did finish the Palm pen I was working on...got one barrel done and never have gotten back around to making the second one.
Palm sucks. But man it sure is neat looking stuff. I bet we both end up doing it again some day...a long time from now...
The call looks great!

Doug - I'm sure we will both demand to finish a full pen with Black Palm.... I also agree that it will be a long time from now! AWESOME looking stuff - but I'd never offer it because it's such a PITA to turn, no one would pay what I would charge for it.
