Well I finally got my Violin picture frame finished, some of the process: Used 3 different router bits on some 1¾" x 2" slightly curly maple for the frame. The profile I wound up with. Frame glue-up. My canvas print wrapped on my plywood backer. I used ¼" Baltic Birch plywood, then 2" wide ¼" BB ply around the perimeter to allow enough edge to staple to. Test fit before staining and clearcoating. Stained with a chestnut oil based stain, 3 coats lacquer satin, 3 coats poly satin. Turned pegs to hang the bows and violin hanger installed. Hung on our bedroom closet/room divider. Couldn't get a very good straight on shot, kind of close to the other wall. Side view. I guess even if I never figure out how to play this, it didn't come out costing anymore than a Terry Redlin painting ($94 for the canvas print around $300 for the violin), and I kind of like the way it looks. Plus if I decide to practice, I just have to grab it off the wall ;-) What do you think? Thanks ~Mike

I'm usually not one for staining, but that stain really brought out the grain in the maple. Nice job.

I agree with Jerry. The stain really popped the curly figure in the Maple. I think it looks great and it's a very unique design.
Good luck on learning to play it.

Sorta off topic, but every time I see a violin these days I think of an advertisement that's been running on TV where reference is made to Charlie Daniels playin a mean fiddle, then showing him sawing away on a fiddle borrowed from a string orchestra, breaking the strings on both the bow and the fiddle. I couldn't tell you what the ad is for (not a real great thing to say about an advertisement) but it really cracks me up. ;D

"...3 coats lacquer satin, 3 coats poly satin"How did you come up with that? Don't get me wrong, I really like it. Just wondering why you put poly over laquer. Yes sir, Charlie Daniels can flat play a fiddle. Saw him live back in the day, IIRC

I don't usually like to stain either but I couldn't find any 1-3/4" thick curly cherry, so I figured this wouldn't be to bad. I was pleasantly surprised at how it brought out more curly than I thought was there.
In the old days, in my automotive painting, we used lacquer as a primer under urethane without any issues.
After I had stained this frame, I put it in front of my fans by my woodstove, after an hour decided I wanted to get started on clearcoating. Using the lacquer (rattle cans) as I've done before seems to work fine over stained wood without issue, and dries quickly. When I've used poly (again in the rattle cans) it doesn't seem to work well directly over the stain (especially when you don't wait overnight for the stain to dry), I always seem to have fisheye issues otherwise.
You must realize I'm not talking dripping wet stain here, I stained, wiped off and let sit an hour before spraying the lacquer, there were no "wet" spots. Probably not the best process, a person should really probably wait longer for the stain to dry, but I've not had any issues with things I was in a hurry for and done this way.
Thanks for the nice reply's. ~Mike

Hey, seems to work just fine.
I'll keep that process in the back of my mind (for a short while)
