It's coming right along! The horizontal boards (looks like 2x4s) are there to keep the glue up from bowing up or down, right? How do you keep the glue from sticking the glue-up to the horizontal boards?

It's coming right along! The horizontal boards (looks like 2x4s) are there to keep the glue up from bowing up or down, right? How do you keep the glue from sticking the glue-up to the horizontal boards? Yeah, the cauls (I was tired and couldn't bring that word to the front of my mind last night) help to keep the face of the panel in line, so I don't have to do quite so much corrective planing/sanding cleanup. The first part of the panel, I only had two cauls, and it really ended up being fairly non-flat. So I made 3 additional pairs of cauls. That seemed to help a lot. It looks pretty good this morning. How to keep the glue from sticking to the cauls? One strip of masking tape across the edge of each caul is all it needs.

For a bit of added clamping pressure when you go to glue the sub-assemblies into the final top, you might try some wedges. Since you'll be using the cauls, tack down some stops on the cauls on both ends. Butt one edge of the glue-up against the stops on one side, then use some pairs of wedges on the other end of the cauls to add additional clamping pressure. Wedges alone will apply more even pressure along the length than will clamps alone, and may be easier than using another long piece to even out the pressure between clamps.

I'm going to have to come up with some creative solutions for the final assembly. I don't have many clamps that will facilitate 48", and I'm not anxious to invest in over $100 of clamps at this point. Fear not! I've already got some ideas if what I have for clamps won't do it.
