Where are you? City / State? How cold does it get where you are?
My FIL made his, in Joshua CA gets some snow in winter time but not bad, frame with concrete blocks 4 x 8 x 16... set under Grade... Had a door like yours... Worked great! Always had tomatoes, etc. faster than anyone else!

I'm in Maine. It gets pretty cold. We hope this extends our year a bit with things that are hardier in the cold (greens, etc), and gets us a leg up on spring.

I need to build one of these. I like to get the veggies started early, but I do not have enough window space in the house. That would come in handy on getting things started in the garden.

When I was a kid my Dad used to make a couple of them each spring out of old window frames with the glass in of course.He called it a hot bed and sometimes a hot box,like you say, sure got a head start on the spring gardening weather.
