Pretty slow going, seems like everything takes so much more these days. Plan called for some 3/16" dowels. They apparently forgot to put them in the parts kit, everything but. Figured no big deal get some from my local hardware store, nope they don't have any (small town only one hardware store next nearest to me is a 60 mile round trip). Okay had some 3/16" brass rod left over from a knife handle I made a while back, (got off the net, can't get that local either) figure I can turn them a little. I go to chuck my brass rod in my lathe chuck, it won't close up that far. Okay, how about chucking up in my drill press, pretty tough with the full length rod (bows) so I cut all eight pieces I need to 1" long then use my drill press to "turn" them using a board for my tool rest. I used my cordless drill to drill the hole, first a 1/16" bit then a 3/32" bit for the 3/32 brass rod to go threw. Spent an hour and a half last night going to 3 different places to find 3/32" non-fluxed brass rod. Sprayed all the wood parts with a couple coats of satin clear lacquer, put parts on just to see what it looked like: At the rate I'm going on this project I won't be done till Spring. I probably won't post anymore of this till I make some substantial progress, which could be a while at this pace. Thanks ~Mike

I took a ride on a train that was pulled by a engine that looked a lot like that. They called it a shay engine, spellling?,. It was at Cass WV and it took us to the top of a mountain and back, nice ride in an open car with a lot of smoke. www.cassrailroad.com/locos.html
