OK - not to diminish Lexi's inquiry as to why we buy wood - but I think he missed the ball.
So I rearranged the same question - the way I might ask it.
You might not answer - that's OK!

I don't think he missed the ball, I think you are just throwing a different one.

I buy wood because it takes too darn long to grow my own!!!! ;D
Seriously, I really don't buy wood. Occasionally I'll purchase something special if I can't find it at the local cull pile at the sawmill, but normally I make do with what I find there.
EDIT; To answer the question, normally I get as much as I can store without too much trouble when I go. No need in having to go out every other day to get another board. I can easily store two packs worth of lumber, so I try to keep that amount on hand. And, if I use a substantial amount, I get just enough to replenish to that level.

Wish I could modify - I would take that out of my post. Sorry Chris - I didn't mean anything by it. Shoud have read: In conjunction with Chris's post about why you buy wood. Yes - his thread made me wonder how many people - buy wood just to have it -- like me. Yes - I am asking a different question.

The thing about these polls is that it is really tough to touch all of the bases with a limited list of options from which to choose. While I do often buy wood that is priced to good to pass up, sometimes I buy it just because I like a particular slab. Generally it is not the case with stuff normally available at the wood store, but sometimes the local place where I buy wood will have some unusual stuff, maybe a 6/4 or 8/4 slab of spalted pecan or something.
BTW: I had to go into IE in order to cast my vote. Posted in Tech Center about it.

The Voting still doesn't work...
Sure wish they'd modify their POLL routine so it works on several browsers instead of just one... without the use of any other "plugin" requirements, etc. Just make it work... ;D

Yep .. polls are broken. I'm looking into it. Those of you being patient, we appreciate it. Those of you not being patient, we appreciate those who are.

I buy the wood to get the price AND for a specific project. But I always wind up with more than need. So several more projects are made from the purchase.
To get the price, I'll usually buy 100 to 150 board feet at a time.
My supplier loves me. I pick it out from the pallet, put the stuff that I don't want in the rack, they measure the feet, I pay and load my truck. Although the guys usually try to help me load the truck but if they're busy I'll do it my self.

Just starting out, I work out of my cellar (outside access only) with very limited room, so I can't afford to have a giant stockpile of wood. I will only buy for the particular project that I'm working on plus about 30%, which will leave me some leftovers for small projects or something later on.

No big Leo, you are exploring an idea even further.
I like the idea of buying in bulk to have a lot on hand but I also buy whatever catches my eye. So I collect to an extent and buy without a specific project in mind.

I buy wood to have something to work/play with. Why I buy a certain type of wood is another matter.

So far I'm the lone "cheap" vote. I like to go to estate or relocating auctions. I can usually find a wood pile in most homes around here, at least in the country. If it's cheap enough, in the stockpile it goes. That's how (in one case) I got the thousand or so board ft of cherry for under 200 bucks. Then I base projects on the amount of stock I have around.
But some of the other answers fit me as well.
Cheap.
