Well, the fella was supposed to come on Saturday, but had to do some other stuff so came over yesterday afternoon. He brought along a rip saw he had sharpened that was sticking around a certain point on the blade. Took a look and there was a bit of dead rust or something right around that area and after cleaning that off with some sandpaper, the saw did alright. It was a bit course for hardwoods, but he needed it to cut some pine, and it worked nicely on that.
He also brought a small back saw he got off fleabay from someone in England. Very nice Disston with a brass back. Not a lot of those around, I don't think. The teeth had been butchered badly and needed to be jointed flat and new teeth cut, and since we had a limited amount of time and I couldn't find my 16ppi template, we held off on doing that one.
We were more interested in checking out his sharpening technique, so moved on to a larger back saw, late1800s/early 1900s Disston. This had well formed teeth and needed only a slight jointing and reshaping of the teeth so we went after that one. I watched over and made a few miner adjustments to his technique and ended up with a nice cross cut back saw that needs only a bit of cleanup and a coat of wax.
He also brought along a nice pre-1928 #7 panel saw that he had previously sharpened and I checked it out and it looked good.
Had a great time shooting the bull with him and just hanging out.

That's an afternoon I'd covet.
Too bad you live so far on the wrong side of the 40th parallel Jerry else I'd gladly bring a stringer of trout as payment for a saw filing lesson.

I too would say it sounded like fun...except I don't enjoy sharpening saws. I find it to be tedious and monotonous. Heh.

Never have tried sharpening saws. Might be something I need to learn some day. A day in the shop with a friend working on a project of whatever sounds like a pretty enjoyable way to spend a day.
