Finished with 4 coats of medium CA/BLO and polished using Micro Mesh followed by a final treatment of EEE polishing wax.
Joe sent me some of his Monterrey Pine cones for me to use and see if they would work like the ones I use for bottle stoppers and pens. They seem to be almost identical to the Afghan Pine cones I collect locally, although this one left some bigger voids than I am used to getting. Maybe it was just this one cone or maybe I was not being as careful as usual, but this cone lost a few "petals" when I turned it and usually I don't have that happen.
And here is the setup pic...tree trunk glue up, a "raw" pine cone, and one that has been cut on the Band Saw and stabilized with thin CA glue. Maple base (supposed to make you think of snow), Walnut, then a Mesquite branch. I ended up removing the Walnut piece because it made the tree trunk too long and just did not look right. I turned a tenon on the Mesquite piece, drilled a 3/8" hole in the bottom of the cone, and then glued the Pine Cone onto the end of the trunk, then turned everything to final shape.
