Compliments of Mr. Lyddon, here's Joe Tree ;D Finished with 4 coats of medium CA/BLO and polished using Micro Mesh followed by a final treatment of EEE polishing wax. Joe sent me some of his Monterrey Pine cones for me to use and see if they would work like the ones I use for bottle stoppers and pens. They seem to be almost identical to the Afghan Pine cones I collect locally, although this one left some bigger voids than I am used to getting. Maybe it was just this one cone or maybe I was not being as careful as usual, but this cone lost a few "petals" when I turned it and usually I don't have that happen. And here is the setup pic...tree trunk glue up, a "raw" pine cone, and one that has been cut on the Band Saw and stabilized with thin CA glue. Maple base (supposed to make you think of snow), Walnut, then a Mesquite branch. I ended up removing the Walnut piece because it made the tree trunk too long and just did not look right. I turned a tenon on the Mesquite piece, drilled a 3/8" hole in the bottom of the cone, and then glued the Pine Cone onto the end of the trunk, then turned everything to final shape.

FIL's place is in Joshua Tree...
Lots of'em out there...
If I could, I'd ship Doug a Joshua Tree to see how they compared to the Joe Tree, I would... but, they are protected.
;D ;D

Hey Doug, I received the Joe Tree today! It looks more awesome in person than in a picture! I like the little plastic display box you put it in too! It sits on our mantle over the living room fireplace! Thank you very much! Really Very Nice! ;D

Thanks for all the comments everyone. Joe, I'm glad you like it! And it's good to know that there is at least one other kind of Pine tree that have the type of cones needed to turn things from. So, now we know that the Afghan Pine cones I use and the Monterrey Pine cones from California are both suitable cones for turning.
