I got a new sander a week or so ago. Here's the cabinet I built for it. I had just enough red elm for the face frame and drawer fronts. The sides (cabinet & drawers) are cheap birch plywood and the top is oak plywood wrapped with red elm. Kind of a hodge-podge, but good enough for what it's for. The best part...I didn't spend one red cent on it. The drawer slides are even used. I haven't used the sander yet, but I'm getting ready to. I'll give a report in a day or two.

Hope you haven't let the LOYL see that, or it is likely to end up in a bedroom somewhere in your house as a night stand or something. Much too nice for the shop, at least for my shop. ;D

The cabinet looks great, Dave and so does that sander sitting on top of it. I'm always pleasantly surprised at how good Red Elm looks. I don't see a lot of it in flat work and always wonder why after seeing it used because it's so pretty.
Thanks for showing and how about your opinion of the Rigid sander after you have put it through it's paces?

NICE cabinet.
Really pretty wood too.
Red Elm, huh?
Kinda looks like ash but a little darker.
Oh - and yeah the sander does look nice.

Man that looks great Dave! I like both the sander and the Red Elm stand. That is definitely furniture grade around my house

That is a really nice looking cabinet.... almost looks like it was made for the house at some point, but has retired to the shop as it has been replaced with something.... agreed - awfully nice for the shop! The sander is eyeballing me from the computer screen - I've eyed that sander before, let us know how it works for ya!! Zac

Well, thank ya Gentlemen.
It's no Hal Taylor rocker, and it's not "hedge apple wood", but it'll get the job done.
That elm is some beautiful wood. I wish I had s'more of it. I ran across a bunch of it awhile back. It's so warped, twisted, and cupped, it's hard to work with. It was cut too thin to do much jointing. I've used most of it to refurbish park benches (bolted to metal frames).
The birch ply ends look so bad, I didn't want to get them in the pics.
And yes, I have heard, "You built THAT for the shop and you don't have time time make me a ........"
If any of you "pen guys" want some of the gnarlier red elm scraps, let me know.
