I am slowly but surely working my way down the list of things I need to get done. This was from some wood a fellow vendor at the Farmers market gave me a while back. It was a 3/4" cutoff from an Oak cabinet that was about 30" long. I figured I would make a pen for his wife out of it when I got caught up after Christmas. I was not too excited about this wood, but was pleasantly surprised by what came out of it. Now I'm going to have to make another pen using this little piece of wood <edit> Oh yeah, this is another of those new "Antique Brass" pen kits. I really like this kit!

I like that one quite a lot. It's very elegant! Love the woodgrain on the writing side of the center band.

Thanks TJ. Yeah, that was the nice surprise. Every once in a while a piece of wood just really surprises you. I don't normally like to use Oak for pens, but this one turned out good. So good that I am going to make another one from the same piece of Oak and see if it has any more surprises in it

Thanks Mav.
I had already tried the Saturn kit in Antique Brass finish and really liked it, but this was the first Slimline in Antique Brass that I have tried.

Yeah Doug - that is a lot better than I would have expected from a plain Jane piece of oak.... I'm sure his wife will love it! Is that one of the "antique" finishes - it almost looks....goldish-bronzish-antique-ish Zac

I am not much of an Oak person, but that is suprisingly nice. Great grain on it. Well Done!

Thanks Zac and Gecko!
This Oak is different than any I have turned before. That is one of the fun things about woodworking in general and turning particularly - you never know what is hiding inside a piece of wood.

I actually like the simplicity of it....be more an item I'd actually use instead of a fancy grained that I'd be worried about someone walking off with.
And the antique look brings out something, just can't put my finger on it....but I like!
Scott (everything is looking good) B

I know what you mean Scott, that Antique Brass just has something about it that appeals to me too.
Tim, I have never heard of curly Oak. That's something new. I'm definitely going to have to see if the whole stick is like that.

I lucked out once, got a wide plank of red oak with some nice curl in it. I made up a bunch of cabinet doors with it, used 'em in the upstairs vanity in the last house. One of these days I may get the ex to let me take a few photos up there... before she sells the house & moves out of the country.
