Solid Cherry coffee table - General Finishes "Georgian Cherry" for the stain. I love natural, but my mom wanted it to match the woodwork. The edges are all rounded over - sorta mission/shaker style, but I wanted to try the rounded over look. It's hard to see and didn't come out as pronounced as I wanted - but the top was supposed to have an "ob-long" look at the profile.... two different round over sizes - smaller radius on top, bigger on bottom. Anyways - I used regular minwax satin poly to finish it - multiple thinned coats. Oh yeah!! The top is from two large book matched boards!! Zac

Hey, that's pretty dang nice bro! Love that wood grain.
One thing that stood out to me is the little overhang on the slats underneath. That gives the piece a little more character. Did you use a router to make the roundovers?
I do have to ask, it seems that in one set of pics its more orange in others it's a deeper red. Which is it? The cherry wood I have has a burnt orange look.

Bad flash - shoulda either picked a different pic or explained that better. Nope - the color is amazingly uniform - no blotching... the gel stain is super easy to work with....work in small areas - and work fast - but it goes on even.
Yep - I used a router table to round over all the pieces....the legs are rounded on all four sides too....
I did get a few Whiteside round over bits - for the record guys - they are amazing and woodworkersworld.net is super fast at shipping! Good prices too - plus cheap shipping.
I had zero burn out on any of the router cuts. Partially was the way I went about it - hog off the majority, then a shallow final pass - and part was the quality of the bits.

That is SOME nice, Zac. Bet it smells good, too, right? Is it my eyes, or is there a tiny bit of taper to those legs?

Must be the picture - the angle of it anyways. No taper - they were cut square.....well - as square as I cut 'em Oh man, Tim - I love the smell of cherry as I am working with it. The stain even smelled great - the Georgian Cherry gel stain, I swear to God - smells like Cherries....in some form. MMmmm.... lol - not that I encourage breathing VOCs lol - but the stain was giving off a very low amount of odor. Zac

Zac, Ya need to be careful with the good smelling fumes there pal. Ya might cut your foot as you try to moonwalk across the top of the table saw and electric slide across the workbench.

Great job, Zac! I can almost see stacks of wood working periodicals piled onto that bottom shelf. Well, maybe if it was in my house or yours. Guess maybe you mom might have other interests. Great color and love the book match on the top.
Cherry is one of my favorite woods to work with, but I don't get much cause it's so darn expensive around here.

That's a nice piece of furniture, Zac...good job. I like the clean lines and I really like the stain and finish.
But, perhaps the most striking feature of all are those toes in the last pic. ;D

Looks good Zac. I like the look of cherry, but I've never had a chance to work with it. I'm not a big fan of staining either. I like the natural beauty of most woods. It seems everybody wants this piece stained to look like that piece. Gotta do what the customer (Mama) wants. Not to nit-pick, but I see something I'd change next time....I'd crop those toes outa the picture.

That's a great looking table, and the top is particularly stunning. I've never worked with cherry, in part because I've heard it's a little fussy with burning and blotching, but wow--your final product makes me want to give it a try.

Hey...
That's quite a table. How long did it take to make it?

Yeah the table looks great.
It looks like you did a " perfect " grain match for the top. I like it.
Your right it does have a mission look to it. ( Did you copy Frank Loyd Wright's table ) ?
I like how it looks in different shades of light.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Jims x2 - and Larry.... sorry - I just realized someone asked a question about it....
Umm.... I can't honestly remember how long it took me to make.... hours or days/weeks.... the finishing process is pretty slow because it's a lot of coats, and depending on when I work in the day - I can sometimes get two coats on, other days just one. So.... essentially - it may take a week just to get the poly applied.
The thing honestly went together pretty fast - so.... I'd guess..... less than 20 hours and it was ready for finishing. I did use pocket screws so I saved a countless amount of time there.
Yeah - Cherry sometimes burns, it happens. You sand - no big deal. To be honest and fair - with good technique - and the Whiteside round over bits I used - I experienced no burning on any of the round overs..... I was VERY pleased, because that was one thing I was hesitant about.... I also had no experience with blotching - I've always had good luck with Cherry but I know some people have had a hard time with it.
Larry - actually I made the entire design up myself.... I mean, not a ton to it - but nah, I didn't model it after anything that I knew of - just kinda went with it and sketched it out on paper.
Thanks guys!!! Zac
