LOML has been wanting an antler pencil for a while. With all the craft shows and customer orders and other stuff going on, I did not get this finished until today. Only a couple days late ;D I used Elk antler for upper and lower barrels and 2 different types of pick guard and some bloodwood to make a "center band" of sorts, although it is all on a single 8MM tube. Pentel .9mm lead mechanism. Oh yeah, she likes it! So, I guess I get out of the doghouse now And the other side looks like this:

I think it came out great, the center band was a great idea. It is hard to get a long piece of antler drilled out, isn't it. ;D

Thanks Mav. Yeah, the first upper barrel I drilled blew out on the side...I figure 50% is not too bad a failure rate for a piece that size I was really trying to save some "bark" on the upper barrel as I managed on the lower one, but it just did not work out this time

Doug - that looks great. I really have to practice on some laminations.... plastic pieces, pick guards - etc.... Oh - and that beading tool worked GREAT! In the top photo (and second photo, even) you can see where there is some dark great spots just as you get past the center band, then it gets broken up by the beading.... very cool looking!

Thanks Zac. I can highly recommend using pick guard materials. The are a very subtle addition that can really dress up a pen. I have been wanting to try out the yellow pick guard with bloodwood - that was something I thought might work well together, and the Black/White/Black pick guard is what I like to use with antler.
And yes, that beading tool worked well on the antler - that was one thing I wanted to test out too. I like the way the beading looks on the "bark" area too, but I was worried my wife would not. I almost continued the beading all the way past the bark, but I kinda liked the look and she liked it too.
Thanks for the comments. I appreciate the feedback.
