Found 2-- 4"x 6" x 16' cedar beams today for $15 a piece. Gonna let 'em sit until I'm ready to tackle the patio cover. Taped 'em together so they won't warp. Now if I can only find the rest @ a descent bargain.

Larry, yes sir, I wish the wife saw it that way. She has been screaming for a patio cover for 2 years. Maybe if I let 'em sit long enough she will forget they are there. In reality, I believe I'll start on it pretty quickly before it gets to hot. BTW- I will complete plotting the molds today. It is definitely a painstaking process, but worth every minute of it. I decided on the Chestnut Prospector as well. Beautiful and capable of taking the family out. I may have to shorten it by a foot or so. Quick question: Is it necessary to have the strips longer than the canoe. The lumber I am finding is all 16' same as canoe. If so how much extra length is necessary. Book says a foot on each end I believe. That seemed a little excessive to me.

Kyle, You can use shorter pieces. Just make sure your joint is at a mold station and that all joints are staggered.
As the strips from each side run off the stems they will meet just a few inches away from the stems. When the stripping is done ,strips will be trimmed back to the stems. I also don't think you need to have 12 inch hanging off the end, too much waste.
hope this helps

Larry thanks for the reply, Yes, I understand the scarf joint method. I just want to avoid as much of that as I can. I found some longer wood last night so I'll be fine. Ignore the PM I sent concerning stem molds. I figured it out . Thanks again buddy.
