My wallet ended up being my deciding factor....allow me to explain. I was looking at the DeWalt and the Makita 12 inchers. A friend of mine told me to look at the Milwaukee as he thought it was a nice saw and right up there with the other two. I looked at it on the shelf at Home Depot two days ago. It's a solid saw, gets good reviews around the net too. $550 at Home Depot, $650 online. I had a line on the Makita for $450 and 10% off starting this weekend at my local woodworking store (Wood Werks) so I was pretty much set on that. I go back today to get my hands on it again and all 3 that they had are gone! I ask the guy to look up the next shipment and he says, oh, that's the one we're selling for $299, they're gone and we're not getting anymore. "Come again" I say. $299? He says, yep. I said "find me one, NOW". I went to customer service and the nice young lady spent 30 minutes locating a saw for me in Dayton and processing the payment over the phone. Sweet! We are there a lot to visit the inlaws so I'll pick her up this weekend.

Joe, can't wait to try it out. The slider mechanism is hidden in that pic by the dust collection piece and the fence. Also, I don't think they even make a 10" model. It's definitely the 12 I bought even thought a 10" would be fine for what I need.

Joe I was going to buy a Makita from them but changed my mind when I saw the price on the Milwaukee at Home Depot.

I know I'll probably get jumped all over for this but I bought myself a 10" sliding compound miter saw from harbor freight years ago, it's worked great, paid $95 for it. I threw away the blade that came on it and got a Freud 80 tooth for it, cost almost as much as the saw. But it's always been accurate and worked great. 2 years ago bought my son a 12" one from harbor freight, he still hasn't opened the box so I can't say much about that one, except that I paid $189 for it. HF is having a sale at the moment on a 12" with laser for $149.00 www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=98194I can't vouch for this particular one, but I got to tell you my $95 saw has been great for more than 10 years and for the cost of a Dewalt I could have bought 6 of these. Here's another, costs more but might be a better blade: www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=96698~Mike

We should start a list of the good tools that HF has. I believe Jason had decent luck with a $14 angle grinder and there are many others. I think there is such a list floating around the net somewhere, maybe we can host a copy

(e.g. The male part of pneumatic couplers are great.) The real problem with HF power tools is that they are just like Denny's. The best Denny's in the world is just 1-1/2 miles down the road from the worst Denny's in the world. Unfortunately, just when you think that the best one should be near by, you're wrong.

I fired it up today to make a few cuts in some 2x4. Not an exhaustive run in any sense. It has nice adjustments, the detents are right on. I know this because the handle of the miter table has a built in digital angle gauge which is pretty handy. You can get to a close angle or hit one of the detents and from there, you have a micro adjust handle where you can dial it in to .1* increments. Pretty handy if I do say.
The miter table moves smoothly, it slides very smoothly, and the overall fit/finish is very good. A nice addition to the shop if I do say. Once I get some walls up I'll be able to put it to a better and more thorough test, until then I'm only focused on the task at hand.

Sounds like you got some features that weren't in the specs! (or in the small print) GREAT!

So many "nice to have" features with a slider. I'll bet you really will like it a lot. I know I really like the one I have. Hopefully you will like your Milwaukee as much as I like my DeWalt.
