What is your favorite type of wood to turn? And why did you pick that type of wood(challenging, ease of turning, the grain goes BANG)
And what do you turn it into?
Just curious.....

Picking a favorite wood would be like Tiger Woods picking a favorite mistress ;D
I'd have to say that Black and White Ebony is one of my favorites because it really is gorgeous wood, and I especially like it in bottle stoppers where there is more of the wood to show off, but it makes very nice pens too. It turns easily even though it is very hard and dense, but does not seem to suffer the same propensity to crack like real Ebony. And it usually takes a finish very nicely.
A lot of burl woods are also very appealing to me as are spalted woods.

For me... it's fiddleback maple. It turns very well with sharp tools, and sands well, and finishes well, and looks EXCELLENT.

Amboyna Burl is probably about the prettiest, or most interesting I've turned - it turned easily though I did crack the blank - but that was my fault, I'd hardly consider it "hard" to turn.
I have some African Blackwood that came out looking great.... hmm...
Probably some of the easiest, most peal off the blank woods I've turned? Padauk, Redheart, and most Cocobolo.... every once in a while I've found a Cocobolo blank that is oily as hell and a little bit of a bugger to turn.
Seriously - with that Redheart and Padauk, it was like the curls were jumping off the pen blank by themselves!!

Bois d'Arc because it finishes so pretty after turning.

I like Bethlehem Olive Wood. No two pieces are alike, turns and finishes nicely. I make Pens and Bracelet Helpers
