I couldn't find any definitive recipes for WC cutter powders but it would make a heap of sense to add some FeC or FeCo for toughness knowing how brittle early WC lathe bits were.

heh, heh,
Amid all the discussion as to whether the bits were carbide, did anyone actualy look at the Milwaukee item description:
MILWAUKEE Router Bit CBD 1/2" x 3" UP SPIRAL Part # 48-23-8070
That CBD was enough to convince me and if they had actually been HSS, so what? They were still a fair deal even if they can be found for less.
I'm happy to hear they actually are carbide but it wasn't that big a deal either way.

Yep, I looked & looked at that "CBD" thing but figured it was a brand designation. All the other vendors of that same bit all used the same abbreviation - not a one (and I found a LOT of 'em) ever directly stated that the bit was "carbide" or "tungsten carbide" or "C2" or "C3" or "C4" or "C5" or "C6" or Wrangler or CJ-7 or...

You're right, that price was pretty good for a HSS cutter too.
Just the same, that CBD might mean it's on a CardBoarD card package for all we know.

Just got mine today!
"Industrial Carbide"
It's not the bright shiny metal... it looks like a semi-blued metal
Tested 1/2" x 1/8" rare earth magnet (a stack of 3) to it... It was attracted to it... I tested it on two other KNOWN to be Solid carbide bits... they too were attracted to the same magnets.

Or... Could Be Delta. Yeah but the reality is that it meant CARBIDE, despite the naysaying....which was the obvious designation.

When you surf places like Enco and MSC for tooling, you cannot take abbreviations for granted. CBD, while it seems obvious (i thought it might be, too), it's easy to mistake - so it's not unreasonable to want to dig a little deeper to get EXPLICIT statements of your assumption. I don't think anyone said Nay ... unless I missed a horse chasing after leo's seal...

Looks like the HSS/carbide question is moot to me now - the price is doubled today.

I don't think anyone said Nay ... unless I missed a horse chasing after leo's seal... You must not have followed the thread. there were multiple reasons given as to why it was probably NOT carbide...even after Dave said that it was. I'm sure glad I bought mine while they were on sale. FYI - that's neigh, not nay.

Got mine. Yes - they ARE solid Carbide. Might not be micrograin but so what - they are still solid carbide. Shank is not polished - bright and shiny smooth. That is a GOOD thing. The collet will grip it better. Nice cutter. They will last many years. GREAT deal - (2) 1/2 SOLID carbide router bits for $30 bucks. I am happy
