I remember refrigerators than ran on gas - not electric. When I was growing up in Brooklyn, the gas company would gurantee that food would not spoil due to a gas refrigerator failure. They would reimburse for any food that spoiled due to a failure. All that was needed was a receipt (or Gas Co. work order) for the repair and receipts for the replacement food. The funny thing was that it seemed that the gas burned was little more than a pilot light.

I was a loyal Maytag customer for years as were my parents. Several years ago I think Maytag was bought out and the new owner used the brand to market less than acceptable appliances. I bought a Whirlpool washer/dryer about 3 years ago and have had excellent service so far. Dishwasher is a GE Profile that I bought as a floor model and it works great as well.

There are refrigerators in campers that run on either electric or gas (propane) and on gas they pretty much work from what looks to be a pilot light. They are a bit persnickety, from what I understand, as that little flame has to be very well placed to heat a small tube, so leveling of the camper is more important than usual.

When I was growing up we didn't have electricity but we had a refrigerator, it ran on kerosene. I remember dad saying when we got an electric one that he didn't know if he could sleep with that motor running in the house.

Later, I remember a Cold Spot that ran forever & ever! That's funny Joe. I can remember the ice man delivering blocks of ice around the corner. The Rotters had an ice box into the 1950s in BROOKLYN of all places. (Maybe there was more to it than ice... ) They also had a 1924 Packard and would go for a ride every Sunday afternoon. My grandmother had a "converted" ice box. It was an ice box with a refrigeration unit installed in the area where the block of ice would normally go. The compressor and heat exchanger unit was down in the basement. We used that system until 1957. No failures in about 40 years. Funny memories...

I just bought a mix of LG and GE for the new house. Fingers crossed. Consumer reports says we did pretty well based on brand reliability and model reviews.
We have had 3 sets of Kenmore washer and dryers over 6 years and have never had a problem. 3 sets because back east it was customary (at the time) to leave your appliances behind when you moved. Some took a W&D if they were very new but most of the time they stayed.
The GE cooktop they just installed is pretty darn slick. It has a lockout and there is a buzzer alarm if someone turns a knob when it's locked, pretty good for the little ones around. It heats up FAST too, I was pleasantly surprised!

Us kids would run out to greet the Iceman... to get some ice chips... especially during the Summer! Was really FUN! ;D Man those Ice Boxes were really GREEN friendly... I wonder if Gore has an Ice Box... to put it where his mouth is?! ;D

My mom bought the Maytag neptune front load washer when they first came out. She's had nothing but problems and this was a high-end purchase. She has several hundred into the washer since she bought it and when I did some research, I saw she missed out on a class action suit. She can't wait til it goes but can't justify a new one right now.
