OK, I was able to play with Pine Cones today... Here are some from my Monterey Pine: Just because the Fall from the tree does NOT mean they are DRY... It seems like they have dry on their own... and they change in color. I had all kinds of plans on how I was going to start... using a drill press, etc... Well, I took the cones into the shop, laid them down on the bench, saw a hand plane nearby, picked it up & proceeded to knock off the high points... worked surprisingly well! Then, I used some 80 grit sandpaper to get things smoothed a little better... then went to 220 grit. I was surprised by how soft the wood was... VERY SOFT! Here is a picture of this progress...

Well, I managed to get 2 more uploaded... after losing some precious hair! I don't have any higher grit sandpaper... Was thinking of using shellac & wax for the final finish... I'm tired!

Looking good Joe, but you have not gotten into the interior of the cone where the real interesting patterns occur.
If I could make a suggestion...try cutting the pine cone on your bandsaw first, give it a good dose of thin CA to stabilize it, then use the bench sander to shape it. When cutting on the BS I use a quick grip clamp to hold the cone so I don't have to get my fingers too close to the blade. I also square up both ends of the cone on the BS before making the lengthwise cuts on the BS, which gives the clamp a much better grip on the cone.
The pics are very interesting...the Afghan Pine Cones I use look just like the one you have labeled as being too wet. Any cones I have picked up off the ground have been dry enough for me to use. That may be a difference between the different types of Pines.
Keep it up, and keep us up to date with your progress.

Hi Doug...
Thank you for your comments...
When I put thin CA on it, it fizzled a little like there was a chemical reaction taking place... and it really soaked-up fast!
The one I have labeled as Not Dried, has small globs of pine sap at the base of it... I just figured it was TOO WET and really NOT dried.
All of those cones are from the same tree... I also noticed that the Dried ones weigh less than the Not dried ones...
I thought I'd try to make a small Tree shaped thingy for a table decoration or something... I could power sand more off to get to better looking stuff... keeping the tree shape.
What do you think of that?

Absolutely Joe. That will make a nice looking tree, and sanding a little deeper might expose some of the inner beauty of the pine cone.
I was just thinking that cutting on the band saw might get you there a little quicker than just sanding. If you have another dry cone you could experiment with it.

I spent more time looking for pine cones then deer this weekend!
But with all the looking, not one cone was on the ground in a closed(tight) shape. There was only three different types of pine on the property I was at.....Loblolly, Shortleaf, and Longleaf. The only type not up there was Slash Pine. Was hoping for some Loblolly Pine cones(3-6 inches in size)!
Scott (keep up the good works) B

I spent more time looking for pine cones then deer this weekend! Better get used to it Scott! My priority on all vacation and hunting trips these days is to find something interesting to turn on the lathe ;D Sorry you did not find any suitable cones! I had high hopes for your Arkansas pines.
