I did try that, I will try again. Sawduster (Jerry?) or another? Yep, it's still me, Jerry. ;D Glad you found your way over here, and I would say that even though the carvings are neither flat work nor turned stuff, I bet the hall monitors wouldn't call you down for posting your carvings in the flat work projects area. I happen to know the hall monitors here, and they are pretty open to that sorta stuff. If'n it's made of wood, I think it'll do fine.

Wisard, huh? Yep, I can see that.
Here's another vote for the glass idea. I think you'd have one heck of a desk top. Only one drawback...it woud be a shame to cover it with all sorts of desk top junk.

The mirror should be treated before installing. The face and back edge should be seamed (a very slight sanded chamfer to take off the sharp edge from cutting). If a glass company is cutting the glass, they should know what this means. When mirror is cut, the seal of the silvering to the glass has the ability to oxidize, and over time the silvering can discolor or turn black. You can help prevent the edges of the mirror from turning black with a simple spray treatment. Lay the mirror on a flat surface, flat on its face with newspapers under the edge all the way around exposing only the edge and the back. Using a clear acrylic spray (NOT LACQUER), (rattle can is OK), spray the edge and about 1" of the back all around. When mirror is used for a top like this, 1/4" works best. It should be removable. It can lay in a rabbet (loose). It's best, in addition to the rabbet, to substrate the mirror with 3/4" plywood (the whole area), to minimize the possibility of deflection. I would lay a full section of felt on the plywood, and then lay in the mirror. When figuring the depth of the rabbet, allow for the thickness of the felt.

You got something of a medieval look about yourself, Wizard. Maybe a bit of a Druid look. ;D

Tim, I figure your IQ at about 165. You are extremely bright and knowledgeable. Considering I know about such things consider it a compliment, but don't worry, I won't tell anyone. I could be wrong, maybe 170, but what can I say. So what stringed instrument do you play,"Mandolin" You and Jerry are both great guys and good to know.

Dale, that's the number the tests gave me back in high school... the tests are always approximate, o'course (IQ is a pretty nebulous thing). I hung out with a 185 back then, but he tipped over the edge & the last time I saw him he was on his way to NYC to become a junkie & live in the subway. Had a bad history, that one, or we'd've seen him do some really spectacular things. Pity. Um... I fiddlefart around with most stringed instruments, master of none. Right now I've got a Washburn 6 dreadnaught & a junk 4 bass that plays well... the last ex got the mandolin (which, being a bowlback, was a beggar to play), but one of these days if I ever kick loose the time I'll build an Irish-style bouzouki (I don't like the Greek style nearly as much - it sounds fuller, but doesn't handle as well). In school I held first-chair clarinet for almost six years but it makes a lousy solo instrument unless you happen to be Hebrew. One of these days I'll pick up a crossblow flute or maybe a sax & see if I can get my embouchure back. Thanks - I do take it as a complement... although with any blessing comes a burden (they're always packaged in pairs) so I don't see myself as "better off" than anyone else, just another unique collection of characteristics. When it all boils down, that what anyone is... neither "better" nor "worse" than any other collection, none having any more or less inherent value than anyone else. There's only one boat, and we're all in it.
