... as long as it would NOT wear off, etc. when using on a Shooting Board. ;D

I have always dreamed of a plane body made from mild steel. It would be drop proof and stand against wear way better than any brass alloy. Why not make the indestructible "Super Version" of the plane from mild steel U-channel?...... But please do not advertice it with a picture of a plane mashed under the rear wheel of your Farmal.

I'd be willing to give it a shot - it'd have to be hot-rolled steel; cold-rolled will distort too much during machining unless it's carefully heat-aged first. What good's an indestructible plane, though, if it won't stand up to exactly the same abuse as my McCullogh chainsaw? Actually, the chainsaw went under the FRONT wheel...

I didn't read all of the posts and if this has been mentioned, I apologize but . . .
I'd bet that there is a market out there for the blade adjusting mechanism. And once you set up to make a dozen, you could knock out two dozen with little more effort. Lots of folks out there want to make their own planes, so . . .

Good point. I've got a mindful of redesigning that very mechanism, too, to simplify it & make it more durable; I've been reading that it's a weak point after it's gotten some wear in it. Anyone got a good clue how I might post my partially-completed SketchUp model of this smoother? I'd like some feedback. Until I can find a good way to post it (it's not complete enough for SketchUp's 3D Warehouse yet)... here's a peek.

I don't have a clue how you'd post that. The only feedback I can think of is that it might be better with more smaller dovetails, maybe 5 or 7 smaller ones, evenly spaced. Or, break it up and two two biggr ones near each end, and a couple little ones in the middle (in front of and behind the mouth). So far, I like it. even if you are puttin' the adjuster there I normally don't like it.

Tim,
Looks good to me... I think the DT's hold each section very nicely.
As far as posting goes, I don't know...
You posted it here though... Looks great!

...more smaller dovetails... I've been kicking that around. The little dovetails really aren't necessary, but they DO LOOK better, don't they? I may rework that part a bit. I haven't decided for sure how I'll be doing the adjuster yet - the classic infill adjuster (above the iron) does have its problems, but so does the classic iron-plane adjuster (behind the frog). I may end up making several different types for experimentation's sake. If nothin' else, I may be able to hang that model in somebody's unused Webspace. My ex isn't using hers... and I b'lieve I still have the password to it... maybe I'll hang it there. She'd never know the difference, and it wouldn't cost her a penny.

Attach it to an email and send it to me. I'll stick it up on my SketchUp page and you can link to it from there. I got space and bandwidth, both.

Thanks, Jer!
Also... thanks to all for - first, the initial nudge and then for all the input into this thing. Geez, I hope I don't let ya down...

Yes!
I like that, with the racin' stripes on it, it'll look and be like a workhorse!

Tim, I got the file and uploaded it to my website, and added the html code to retrieve it, but for some reason the same code that I've had on there for ever which would access the skp file and download it gives me a dns error file not found. Support at godaddy was not at all helpful and really didn't have a clue what I was doing. I've tried pasting the address for the skp right into the address bar and still comes up file not found, although the file is there when I look at the directory in ftp.
I'll post a help message over in shooting the bull and see if some can look at my code and see what is wrong.

...and cabinets. ...and mudding & sanding drywall. ...and makin' a couple tidbits for Duc. ...and bunches o' other stuffs... I'll get to it, though - I promise. Just not tonight. I banged my knee out in the shop today, and it hurts somethin' awful... more so if I don't keep it moving to keep the edema down.

I vote for the small dovetails, I think they make it look classier. Sweet looking either way though!
