I think a really nice tutorial to add to our tutorials forum would be on how to make the pine cone - so that it is a turnable thing.
Do you fill it up with CA?
Do you use some acrylic platic epoxy mix?
Is it a secret?
Anyway - it would be an AWESOME addition to the tutorial section.

OK, OK, I'll try to work on it...
Actually I have yet to find anyone else who has found suitable cones to use in their part of the country. Therefore I'm not sure how useful it will be, but a write-up is probably in order for those who are curious about the process.

Could you expand on suitable cones....
Here in Arkansas there are thousands of tree farms for the lumber/paper companies. And they normally let a large part of the trees get very large(22-27 inches) in diameter, plenty big enough to put on a LOT of cones!
What time of the year is best to gather the cones you use? How do you keep them from opening?

Hey Scott. I don't keep them from opening...that is the problem, only a few will drop without opening. The other problem is that the only kind of Pines I have found that will work are Afghan Pines.
The bottom line is that they must be closed up but dry. And not sappy. As soon as you cut into one, you will know if it will work. If it is too sappy it will gum up everything - I tried some green cones picked off the tree and they just do not work.
Why the Afghan Pines have some that drop from the tree without opening I have no idea. And I don't know if there are any other kind of Pine trees that will work...hopefully there is.
The Afghans seem to drop their cones year round, so I they can be collected year round.
Hope that helps. If you find any that you think might be suitable, please let me know.
