How do you folks grind your spindle gouges? I was playing with different grinds on mine, and now I've got a totally useless grind on it. I need to get it back to something useful, and need some guidance to find that good angle.

Boo, it's good to see you here, too! Cripes - every time I turn a round (pun INTENDED) I see someone else's familiar face here... and EVERY TIME, I grin like crazy.

Im glad someone stared a new forum. I HATE ROCKLER! I had a run in with them. Bottom line they, in my opinon they lied to me. I talked with the head of cust service , and one of the VPs with no satisfaction at all. The head of cust service was very rude after several phone calls. I have made Craft Supplies very happy spending several thousand dollars with them which Rockler could have had my buss. But all in all im glad to see yall here.

Wow! That's one of the first complaints I have ever heard about Rocklers cust. svc...!!
My experience has always been the opposite... they always answer on the 1st or 2nd ring, by a real person... none of this Push 8 for English crap, & they have ALWAYS made me happy!
Exactly, what was your problem? What product? ... just curious...

Joe its a long story. I will try to make it short. I bought a jet mini lathe from a retail store in tx. Everthing was fine until I tried to use the inside of the headstock. IE a #2 morse tapper in the head stock was over 30 thousands out of round. When I talked to them bout it they told me to bring it back and they would replace it. Thats when the chit begain. I drove a hundred miles only to be told they didnt say that. This was when gas was 4 dollars a gallon. So I had to drive a hundred miles back home. When I approached the salesman I had spoke to on the phone he told me he never said he would replace it. Thats when my opinon was they lied to me. I have bought a few things from them since then. But it was cause I couldnt find it elswhere. The lady that is over customer service was snappin at me on the phone after the 3rd phone call. I ask her if she was havin a bad day and she snapped at me again. So my money now goes to Craft Supply that has a great cust service and they dont treat u like chit.

That really is pretty bad - 30 thou is a long way off... and they SHOULD (for their own benefit) made it right for you. Jet, too - I'd be terribly surprised if Jet let you use a lathe that far out of whack.

Boodrow,
Have you contacted Jet about the problem?
Sounds like that is a Defective problem covered by any warranty...

Angle of grind is not critical in my eyes, anything close to the std is fine, just keep 'em sharp thats more important. The proper angle may make it easier for a few who invented the std cause thats what they were comfortable with but my feel is my feel and yours is yours so whats that mean ,,,,,,,,,find whats best for you and keep it close to that.

Rob I'm newbee to turning so I got the wollverine jig with the varigrind jig and it made world of difference in my spindle gouge. Might just been my sharpening.

I have the wolverine w/varigrind. Just was looking for some sort of baseline for how I should try and sharpen these things to get them back to a usable state. Right now they don't cut at all.
