Check it out - I made something that is actually useful, besides pens!! I'm pretty happy with it - just started out tinkering - and it turned out well so I went with it. It's just a piece of Pine 2x4 turned down into a chisel handle. The chisel when I got it - was completely covered in rust - it's a Wards Master I think it says on it. I cleaned it up quite a bit and have always just had it in one of the nail set pouches in my tool belt - a beater chisel comes in handy ya know? Since it had an opening for a turned handle - I thought I'd try it out. The turning went well - I made a small, tapered tenon that goes into the chisel socket - I then finished with Crystal HUT and buffed with tripoli, W.D., and Carnauba wax. I realize Pine wouldn't be ideal for a handle - but like I said - this was just me tinkering around. Dick - watching that wine glass turning video helped!! Thanks! Oh, and last are a picture or two of a Birds Eye Maple pen I made, though - I don't really see as much "birds eye" as I had hoped. Thanks!! Zac

Thanks guys!! I ended up using epoxy to hold the handle in place - though THE TENON DID FIT!! One thing I wanna say about the Epoxy - one part of the two part process smelled like a skunk lol.... Oh - and the chisel handle is NOT meant to be struck with a mallet or hammer - kinda like hand use only. Zac

It's longer so you've got room to get your hand around it wihout risk of pinching skin between the edge and the wood.

Those are great Zac. I agree with Boodrow...you got it bad! It is hard to believe that chisel handle is pine...that is some great looking pine and should hold up just fine with hand use only. Pens are funny about what kind of wood they show off best. Birdseye works well if it really has a lot of the birdseye, otherwise it will not look as good as a box made from the same wood. Something happened on that third picture...I can tell it's a pen, but that's about it Nice job all the way around. Keep up the good work. You are progressing rapidly!

That chisel handle is perfect, Zac, and will be very useful also. Like TJ said, that's a fine paring chisel and it will certainly come in handy, especially now that it has a handle in the socket.

Bravo Senor
Birds eye is funny stuff it comes and goes with in a piece of wood, you can actually turn it away or plane it away but go deeper and it could return but mostly does not..

Yeah - my photography has room for improvement - I really should think about making a small set up to take "nice" photos of small things - Something that doesn't really shoot a glare back at ya - not sure what happened to the last pic of the pen - I know it looks like chit lol
Thanks guys - yeah, the handle is really just pine.... from a construction grade 2x4 no less... I was pretty impressed with how the grain came out on it.
One thing though.... on the buffer - it is pretty dang easy to rough up an angled edge like that on the top of the chisel.... being as soft as pine is - the edge "roughed up" a bit because I let it sit in the same spot too long. Ah well - we learn right?
