My last completed project from this weekend: a Sierra in mystery wood. Well, it's not a complete mystery, as I knew what it was when I bought the wood. However, the label dropped off the blank, so I no longer know what the wood is. In any case, I'm not entirely happy with this one. The finish isn't very nice near the nib end, and the wood was turned a bit too thin on the other end. This picture is pretty gosh darn crappy too. Live and learn though. I kind of like the way this kit looks, even though it doesn't really utilize much wood.

Rob, you are seeing the "clouding" that drives me absolutely nuts when I get it using a CA finish. Is the wood oily? It kinda looks like it might be Tulipwood to me, but I have not had problems with CA on the Tulipwood I have used, so maybe not. I really dislike the pen kits like the Sierra (though I have not actually made a Sierra I think it is very similar to the Wallstreet II and Gatsby pen kits that I have used) that use a huge tube...I have to be very careful in choosing non-brittle wood to use with them

Can't be tulipwood - tulipwood's a LOT lighter-colored than that, at least mine is. Mine's pink & light tan.

Nope, it wasn't tulip or manzanita.
Yeah, the huge tube is strange. I think it was a 27/64" or some such. Seemed strange.
Yes, I sometimes get clouding. I notice it more often when my CA is old, and when I'm using darker wood. I also ponder if I get clouding if I put another coat of CA on before the previous coat has entirely finished it's chemical processes (back to the old CA concern).

Sounds awfully familiar Rob. I have had very similar experiences and theories. If you ever figure it out, please let me know.

Looks like cocobolo, sans the grain lines...maybe it's an unstriking cocobolo blank?
As far as the sierra, I used to like the kit - easy to turn, doesn't use much wood...
BUT, I've had a few gifts returned to me because the stupid transmission was stripped...heavy-handed people can really make that thing strip and click in short order, so I'm leery about using them anymore...

I already have cocobolo at home and wouldn't have gotten more. ...it's a mystery! :-D Maybe next time I'm back at that store I can look around and see if I can find any more of the same, but I think it was in the "discount" section of wood, which is why I got it.

next guess would be Jatoba or Padauk No, it's not cedar, Jatoba, or Padauk. It's quite light in color; it's just a shade darker than pink, kind of like freshly milled cherry. Nowhere near as dark as jatoba or padauk. It's something uncommon, for sure. I don't usually pick up blanks for wood that I can generally get in the cheap scrap/cutoff bin at one of the two lumberyards I frequent.

You don't have a picture of the offcut, do you, Rob?
