I'm like Leo in the fact that I was brought up to return something in as good as or better shape than when I borrowed it. A couple of years ago my wife told me she wanted some tools for Christmas! Now that is something I CAN shop for...lol. We have a HF in town and she now has quite a collection of Pittsburgh tools and leaves my good stuff alone. Between her and her mother, they can go through an entire set of screwdrivers in nothing flat. Watched her try to open a can of paint one time with one of my chisels. I went into the house and got one of her knives from her good set of silverware and said use this instead. She looked at me like I had two heads and I said that's the same way I feel about my tools. Was a bit frosty around the house after that but she got the message.

I won't let most folks even into my shop, much less loan a tool out. My neighbor is an exception and he and I have no problems with loaning a tool to each other, though more often than not it is something for plumbing not for woodworking.
I often just offer to do whatever the task is that someone is asking to borrow a tool for. It's just easier that way.

Hehehe - Imahic - that is a GOOOOOD one!!
It's one thing to open a paint can with a screwdriver tip - most likely you'll just destroy the paint cant......but a chisel? Ouch!
The other great tip I've heard on this post..... before letting someone borrow a tool..... tell them exactly how much it costs!

I have loaned tools in the past but most people don’t know how to take care of them so I stopped loaning. If pressed I tell them that liability is a concern for me so I don’t loan tools. bmorto

Have you ever come close to using a pair of scissors to cut some paper? ... a Special pair of scissors from the sewing room?! Advice: DO NOT TRY IT! ;D

I remember when I was young - my mom made that point VERY VERY clear, Joe! I have carried that thought since then!

I'll really only lend out to my brother who lives nearby and takes as good of care of his tools. It saves us from buying 2 of the same tool that we will probably never need at the same time.

I have lost a lot hand tools by lettin people borrow them. I have a couple friends that have a key to my shop , and know they can use anything I have , but at there own risk. beside those 2 there is only one more person I would give a key to my shop. That would be Cody , but I dont have anything he needs to use he allready has it. LOL Boodrow

I too do everything in my power to return tools that I borrow in the same or better condition as when I borrowed them. If not, I apologize and offer to pay for a new one (although that was only 1 time). This includes paying attention to how they wrap the power cord.
There's really only 2 people who I would allow to borrow tools: my dad and bleedsblkhwkred (probably lurking around here somewhere). I know that they're particular about their tools and will treat them as their own. Although, they usually don't need to borrow anything from me since they already have their own. That's probably the only people who I'd even ask to borrow tools from as well.
