Just kidding. I built this one the whole way through just to see how it would go. From here I'll go into assembly line mode with the rest of the boxes. It will go a lot quicker that way. FYI the toe kick will be a separate platform. We were going to use red maple, but when I actually saw it, I didn't like it, so I came home with hard maple instead. Nice to work, but there's not a lot of give there. I also got cherry for trim and accents, and poplar for the drawers. As you can see, I went with maple ply rather than melamine. She didn't like the look of it, and I can still sling a sheet of plywood around by myself ... not so much with the melamine. I still have no idea how I'm going to finish these things, but I'm going to play around in the shop this week with shellac or BLO followed by water-based poly. We shall see ...

Here it is June 8, 2010 and you still are not done.
I know Rome wasn't built in a day.
Keep us posted with your WIP.

Maybe by Friday ... Ten more sheets of plywood to break down, a dozen or so drawers to make, about a thousand raised panel doors ... I'm having fun!

Lookin' good. Whatch ya got for counter top material? Polished granite sure would be a treat on top of those.

Thinking something dark, but we're still kicking it around, knowing we're not going to be in this house forever ... trying to walk the tightrope between quality and cost.
A friend of mine has a business called Counter Artists, and I'm thinking of having him do the counters, but again, we'll have to weigh the cost, durability, etc. It's a poured solid surface kind of thing.
I'm trying to leave the old cabinets in place until the last minute, but they're definitely holding up other parts of the process at this point: the walls particular! I'm taking a week off in July and hope to be ready to make some real progress then. Tonight I'm going to experiment with some finishes: water based poly alone, water based poly over shellac or over BLO?
