Well, I went and ordered the wrong kits by mistake, and instead of sending them back I just used them. This is a piece of the spalted pecan that me and Scott have been cutting on that just didn't make the sale pile. Please let me hear your comments, as I am fairly new to pen turning and would greatly appreciate the feedback. The camera takes extremely good pics and picked up on all of the dust particles evidentely, LOL. This is 6 coats of CA and mm'd to 12000. E

Chit E - it makes me wanna buy the pen from you. Seriously - that is fabulous, I've wanted to make a fountain pen for myself - but just haven't. That's a real sharp looking pen!!

This is a chrome Sedona, what should something like this sell for? E It won't sell....just let me put it in my pocket. It won't sell....just let me put it in my pocket. It won't sell....just let me put it in my pocket. It won't sell....just let me put it in my pocket. If I had to put a price on it.....somewhere in the $95 - $125 range for the Arkansas area(maybe I'm way off). But if the right person walked up, a LOT more. Scott (I had it in my pocket, but got caught) B

I can't sell a pen for more than 60, I'd daresay...but my town is tiny! Very pretty pen! (Oh, and just so you know - I'm pretty sure that's a chrome Baron, not a Sedona)

This is a Craft Supplies Jr. Statesman II in Gold/Rhodium: The customer paid $135 and was very happy, he also bought this at the same time for $30. This customer has homes here (Ladonia) and in Dallas

Maxwell, you are correct. I went back and looked at my invoice, and it says Baron on it. I must have typed in a wrong number or something when I was ordering, as I never even went to look at barons at their site, just Sedona's, I like that decorative center band on the Sedonas.

Emerson, that is a real beauty! I love that wood.
I've never done a Baron pen, but that one looks fantastic. The only improvement I could possibly see, is that the lower barrel is not exactly straight line from bushing to bushing. Pretty close, but I have to say I noticed it. Most people will never see that, but when you start making high end pens and getting the high end prices for them you will want to get them as perfect as possible.
Now, to get that little extra attention to detail on a pen like that, I would use a skew, laid on its side and used like a scraper. Use a very light touch, and make sure you do not let either end of the skew dig into the wood. You will be surprised at how that little change will turn a very nice pen like that into an exceptional one.

Question...
Doug, Are you saying that 'high-end' pens need to be striaght from B2B?
So this pen kit is a Baron? Not a Sedona?
Scott (now I'm confused) B

Scott, it is a Baron, evidentely the screw up was not only tip, but whole pen. The Sedonas have that decorative band.

Question... Doug, Are you saying that 'high-end' pens need to be striaght from B2B? Not necessarily, just that it is very hard to get a perfectly straight line if you turn B2B and using a skew like a scraper is one way to get that line a little straighter. Some pen kits I prefer to have a slight curve in the barrel and some I prefer a straight B2B line. And some pens I have changed my preference on... And no matter which way you make a pen, some will like it and some will not...and the customer is always right

Thanks for the input, I did a nother one today, but I am not really impressed with it, as the CA glue seemed to turn some of the antler yellow, plus I just didn't like how it turned out.

We need to help you figure out what it is that is turning your antler yellow Emerson. That has got to be frustrating. I'm guessing heat some how, unless you are getting transfer from sand paper or micro mesh.
If you want help figuring it out, I'd like to hear what your process is...there is probably something that is going to fix that problem for you, if we can just figure out what the cause is.

Doug, I'm willing to bet that it is heat as well. The spot that turned yellow had more air in it than did the other spots because it was the inner core stuff in that spot. When I glued it back together, I added some shavings to that spot as well. I'd bet $$ that is was heat that did it.
